Australia has revealed plans to construct a new stadium to host the 2032 Olympic Games. The announcement comes despite authorities previously promising that no new stadium would be built for the event, which will be hosted in Brisbane.Newsweek reached out to the Brisbane City Council via email for comment. Why It MattersHosting the Olympics can be a massive boon for the city where it takes place, but the preparations for the event can often place significant stress on the country's infrastructure. Australia has less than a decade to prepare Brisbane to receive thousands of guests and tourists. What To KnowOn Tuesday, Queensland authorities announced that Brisbane's Victoria Park would be the site of a 63,000-capacity Olympic Stadium ahead of the host city's preparations for the 2032 Olympics. The construction plans include the main stadium, a 20,000-seat boutique stadium at the Brisbane Showgrounds, and a 3,000-seat showcourt at the Queensland Tennis Centre. The number of tourists who visited France during the 2024 Olympics was estimated to be around 11.2 million. In a statement, Queensland Premier David Crisafulli said that original plans to use the 130-year-old Brisbane Cricket Ground, also known as "the Gabba," for the Olympics fell through after a review of the grounds found it unable to support the event."Building the new stadium at Victoria Park was a choice between spending billions on temporary facilities and temporary stands that delivered no legacy or securing the future of sports, like the AFL, with a new home," Crisafulli said.During Australia's 2024 elections, Crisafulli pledged that a new stadium would not be built. Speaking on the policy change, he said, "I have to own that, and I will. I am sorry. It's my decision, and I accept that decision."Instead, the Gabba will host Olympic cricket before being demolished after the event. What People Are SayingDeputy Queensland Premier Jarrod Bleijie, in a statement: "After the wasted years of uncertainty caused by the indecision of the former Labor Government, we will deliver generational infrastructure that can host our biggest sporting and entertainment events and leave a lasting legacy for our State."What Happens NextThe next Olympic Games are set to take place in Los Angeles in 2028.Do you have a story we should be covering?
