Avon eyeballing purchase of school building, relocating city hall

AVON – The City of Avon is considering the purchase of an Avon School District building and eyeballing moving city hall from Chester Road to Detroit Road. And according to Avon Mayor Bryan Jensen, the move would likely not cost the city much if anything at all, and they’d get a much larger and more easily accessible space in the process. The school has openly discussed the possibility of vacating and selling the Detroit Road administration building with the city, after talks of sharing the space didn’t work out. The Avon Schools are contemplating a move of their administrative offices to the Heritage Building where they currently have some available space. Jensen said the city purchasing the administration building feels natural because the city would be able to not only utilize the building, but also preserve the historical space. “We’ve been in talks with them and it’s getting closer and closer,” Jensen said. “I think that we would be able to use that building for a lot of things. We use it for our safety town during the summer. There’s a playground over there, and there’s some soccer little soccer fields for kids to play. “We could purchase it with an agreement for what the appraised value is or they could put it on the market,” he explained. “If they put it on the market, I’m not sure anybody would preserve that building. It could be torn down it could be used for anything. I think it’s important that if someone can preserve it, I think we’re the best entity to do that. We would like to have that building and we would move City Hall from where we’re at right now to the building over there.” Jensen explained that the building is largely ready to be occupied by the city, with minimal updates and upgrades. He explained the potential move is based mainly on three key factors – preserving the building, easier accessibility and more space. He said the current location of city hall is particularly challenging to get in and out of, particularly for area senior citizens and the fact that there is no traffic signal. The city would be able to largely fund the purchase of the property through the sale of the existing city hall, so funding is not an impediment to the purchase. Jensen said he believes that the city will be putting something before council to vote on likely within the next month. “The city could utilize that building and it preserves a little piece of history,” Jensen said. “There’s two floors in that building and we could use that extra space for all sorts of community events and other things, so I think overall if it comes through, I think it is important for our residents and it’s something that we could control. “There’s a law that allows the schools and the city to work together, so I think it makes a lot of sense and I think the schools think the same way,” he concluded. “We certainly will get input from the residents, but again preserving a piece of history that I think anybody that’s gone to Avon knows that was probably one of the buildings that they spent a lot of time in.” Jensen said he plans to give a tour of the space to members of city council and discuss the advantages of the possible move. He said the school space is currently in better shape than the current city hall.
