The Baby Cricket Cranes suffered defeat in the finals of the Easter Series against their counterparts Tanzania U-19 as they continue their preparations for the U-19 World Cup Qualifiers slated for later this month.
The final game was interrupted by rain but the 143 that was scored by the hosts was never going to be enough against a determined Tanzanian unit. Chris Kidega (55) continued his good form with the bat and his consistency at number four will give the Ugandan technical group some comfort, especially because the rest of his teammates failed to influence proceedings.
Tanzania was able to battle against the rain and chase down a reduced total with Augustine Meya Mwemele (48 not out) anchoring the run chase to lead the visitors to glory.
The hosts Uganda could only manage two wins out of the four games they played during the series, winning twice against Tanzania but failing against the Uganda Emerging and visitors Tanzania in the group stages.
Tanzania went back home with two wins in the bag for them out of the four games they were able to play during the series.
The two sides are both preparing for the U-19 World Cup Qualifiers that will be in Nigeria later this month.
The hosts Uganda will take the lessons, especially with their batting. The youngsters are clearly struggling to bat for 50 overs, most of the batters scored runs very quickly even in the games won by the hosts. The skill to be able to bat for 50 overs still misses but that takes time to nurture and develop. Apart from Gerald Olipa and Christopher Kidega, the rest of the top order failed to click and struggled to drop anchor, especially against some quality bowling. The lower order made some good contributions which means Uganda can bat deep with Peter Ocen and Jonathan Nyiro making some contributions down the order.
The bowling was decent especially the slow bowling options of Ali Balidawa, Gurjivan Singh, Richard Sohera and Abdul Aziz Tandia while Jordan Oketcho impressed among the medium pacers as the others Jonathan Nyiro, Christopher Kidega and Peter Ocen lacked the consistency to trouble batters which is a key skill in 50 Over cricket.
There is not so much time for Head Coach Emmanuel Isaneez and Robinson Turinawe his assistant to work on the areas of weaknesses but they have an insight into the things that need correction if they are going to take Uganda to a fourth U-19 World Cup appearance.
Kidega won the MVP award of the series while Dylan Thakur, the Tanzania Captain, won the Best Batter award and Ali Balidawa won the best bowler award.
