The Bahamas’ Billie Jean King Cup (BJKC) team continues to roll at the Americas Zone III Tournament in Santa Tecla, El Salvador.
The team’s undefeated streak moved to three against Jamaica, whom they defeated 2-1 in their third tie of group play.
The national team managed to go unbeaten with a 3-0 win/loss record in Group B play to advance to the promotional playoffs.
Head coach Kim O’Kelley was proud to see the girls win their third straight matchup.
“Jamaica is an incredible team. We played our hearts out. Simone is 3 — 0 with 6-0, 6-0 singles victories and I’ve never seen that before. It was an amazing feeling. We had about five match points and lost 4 of them, but pulled out the final one,” she said.
Simone Pratt, who played in the top singles position, is simply in a class of her own. Her undefeated streak continued against Jamaica’s Adeola Greatorex with a pair of 6-0 victories in sets one and two.
It was her third straight singles win, and she has yet to concede a matchup at the tournament.
Coach O’Kelley said Pratt’s focus is what sets her apart from everyone else in singles action.
“It is her focus. She likes very simple communications — spin, get height, and when in trouble go up with not much pace. Today was a big boost for us. It was all about belief,” she said.
National champion Sydney-Nicole Clarke suffered her first singles loss of the tournament against Jamaica’s Najah Dawson.
The latter downed Clarke 6-2 in the opening set. It was a tougher matchup in the second set, but she prevailed once again, 6-4.
With the tie locked at 1-1, Pratt and Clarke had to dig deep in a decisive doubles matchup.
The Bahamian duo gutted out the victory, 7-6 (7-5), in the first set. They returned and fought valiantly for a 7-5 finish in the final set.
Perry Newton, president of the Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association (BLTA), congratulated the girls on their success up to this point.
“It is commendable that The Bahamas is witnessing back-to-back playoff performances at the highest level of team tennis competition, the Davis Cup Men a week ago and now the BJKC women. This competition is called the World Cup of tennis due to the caliber of talent on display. Our elite athletes are proving that they have the talent and are up to the challenge. This is great progress for Bahamas Tennis,” he wrote in a statement.
Team Bahamas will now play in a three-nation pool. The top two teams in that round robin will be promoted to Americas Group II for 2026.
Competition ends on August 23.
