‘Barry Ferguson is his own worst enemy’ – Rangers fans react to Hibs defeat as they raise concerns over manager hunt
@Source: thescottishsun.co.uk
A FEW weeks ago, Rangers fans were beginning to convince themselves that their next permanent manager could very well be one of their own. A die-hard bluenose, a former trophy-winning captain - Barry Ferguson had just taken the Light Blues into the quarter-finals of the Europa League and followed it up with a stunning derby win over arch rivals Celtic. Fast forward to now? And they are back at square one. Rangers lost 2-0 at Ibrox to Hibs this afternoon - their FIFTH successive defeat at home - and were booed off the park by their fans. Ferguson himself was livid after the game and in a raging post-match press conference he revealed he'd told his players "a few home truths". But what of his prospects of getting the manager's job on a full-time basis now? Well, if a straw poll on social media is to be believed, it's looks like his chances are slim to none. Ferguson came into the role with at best, a mixed bag of experience in management. He had last coached in 2022, leaving Alloa after a string of poor results. Prior to that he had enjoyed success at Kelty Hearts and both good and bad at Clyde. He brought fellow Gers icons Neil McCann and Billy Dodds with him to Ibrox, both of whom had experience in the coaching ranks. Ferguson even managed to recruit old pal and modern day club legend Allan McGregor, who had seemed more interested in playing golf than coaching until he was called up to help out. Rangers fans aren't daft - they know this team is far from good enough. Ferguson knows it too. But with new ownership on the horizon, it seems unlikely he'll be given the chance to mould a team of his own. One fan wrote after the loss to Hibs: "I like Barry Ferguson, but he is NOT THE ANSWER as Rangers manager long term." Another said: "Think we can now put the rumours of Barry Ferguson is in the running to bed now. No room for sentiment in football. Hopefully in three months' time we have new owners and a fresh start." A third said: "Nothing has changed since (Philippe) Clement left. These players will not change, a huge transfer window is needed to change this squad. This also puts to bed any notion of Barry Ferguson getting the job." And a fourth commented: "Afraid Rangers need a manager whose ability is greater than Barry Ferguson's. Rangers looked naive in their attempts to break the Hibs defence. Feeling again they could play another 90 minutes without scoring Another bemoaned the lack of genuine change from Philippe Clement to Ferguson. They said: "I genuinely thought when Barry Ferguson came in along with McCann and Dodds, the starting 11 would be picked on merit & others would be given chances. But no, they have just continued with the same p*** that got us in this mess." In a similar vein, another raging supporter took aim at the players and at Ferguson for sticking with them. They said: "Jack Butland makes mistakes every week. Just keep playing him. Cyriel Dessers constantly missing easy chances, keep playing him as well. Hamza Igamane, just play him out of position as well. "Barry Ferguson is his own worst enemy." Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page
