Syracuse, N.Y. – It was nicknamed “The Redeem Team.” The 2008 United States men’s basketball team won gold at the Beijing Summer Olympics. That squad featured some of the biggest names in basketball. Kobe Bryant. LeBron James. Dwyane Wade. Chris Paul. And of course, Carmelo Anthony. Mike Krzyzewski was the head coach of that team. Jim Boeheim served as an assistant. The bounce-back 2008 Olympic squad will now be enshrined in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. “Just a great team,” Boeheim said. The Americans rolled through the Olympic Games, defeating Spain 118-107 in the gold medal game to reclaim their reputations as the best basketball players on the planet. At the 2004 Athens Olympics, Team USA settled for the bronze medal. It won bronze at the FIBA World Championships in 2006, too. The “Redeem Team” was a spin on the first-time “Dream Team” of active NBA players that won a gold medal in 1992. The Redeemers came to China on a quest to erase those four years of relative mediocrity on the basketball court. “It was a great experience,” Boeheim said. “We were on a mission to bring US basketball back. People forget we were in a pretty low state. It was a team on a mission. They were great. Everybody sacrificed and did what they had to do to win it. Kobe Bryant was a great leader for that group. It was a pretty spectacular group of players.” Here’s the entire roster: Carlos Boozer, Jason Kidd, LeBron James, Deron Williams, Michael Redd, Dwyane Wade, Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard, Chris Bosh, Chris Paul, Tayshaun Prince, Carmelo Anthony. Coaches: Mike Krzyzewski (head coach), Jim Boeheim, Mike D’Antoni and Nate McMillan. Jerry Colangelo was the team’s managing director.
