BAY CITY, MI – A look at the high school sports scene in Bay County for April 29, 2025. Bay County coaches are asked to submit results, highlights and comments the night of each event by emailing lthomps2@mlive.com. BASEBALL: PINCONNING COACH HITS 100 Casey Pashak has no qualms following in the footsteps of others. He knows they lead to great things. During a 10-1 and 12-0 sweep of St. Louis, the Pinconning coach reached the 100-win milestone at the helm of his alma mater. It’s a feat his three immediate predecessors – Jeff Sanak, Rick Rudrow and Art Krawczyk – each accomplished with the Spartans. “It’s cool to get that 100-win milestone,” said Pashak, when he was informed of the accomplishment. “Pinconning has had a rich history in baseball and I am happy that I could be part of it as a player and now a coach. I have a lot of seniors who contributed to those wins, being three-year starters.” Many of them came through in the Jack Pine Conference sweep. Isaiah Hoffman had two hits and three RBIs in Game 1 while Zach Laures roped two doubles and drove in two runs. Laures fired 3.2 innings of no-hit ball with seven Ks and Blake Kareus fanned five in in 3.1 innings. Pinconning (12-7, 5-5) scored two or more runs in all five innings of Game 2. Laures and Calvin Holland each drove in three runs while Landen Enciso knocked two hits. Hoffman allowed one hit with seven Ks over 3.1 innings while Alex Shelagowski spun 1.2 innings without a hit. Pashak is now 101-69-2 in his sixth season as head coach of the Spartans. He is the 19th baseball coach in Bay County history to celebrate the 100-win mark and the first since Gib Garcia in 2016. BASEBALL: GARBER GIVES MUTH A SCARE Essexville Garber got big-time pitching performances in a bid to knock off first-place Frankenmuth. But the bats fell silent in tough 4-0 and 1-0 losses. Camden Parker struck out five over six innings in the opener for Garber while Nathan Foret spun a three-hitter in the nightcap. But Frankenmuth countered with Caden Sommerfield and Tanner Kroeger, who combined for 19 Ks in the back-to-back shutouts that kept the Eagles unbeaten in Tri-Valley Conference Red play. “We definitely pitched good enough to win both games,” Garber coach Eric Debo said. “Tip your hat to their guys though. We were good, they were better.” Charlie Maze, Ethan Pett and Foret tallied the lone hits for Garber (9-6-1, 3-4) in the opener and Aidan Zwetzig delivered the only hit in Game 2. Frankenmuth scored on back-to-back two-out singles in the second inning for the 1-0 win in the nightcap. BASEBALL: STANDISH STILL PERFECT IN JPC Standish-Sterling’s first trip through the Jack Pine Conference has been nothing but perfect. The first-year league member is off to a 10-0 start after convincing 11-2 and 15-0 victories over Sanford Meridian. The No. 5-ranked Panthers (15-0-1, 10-0) unleashed a five-run first to set the tone in Game 1. Rylee Blanchard drove in three runs and joined Sam Briggs two hits while Brock Bartlett had two RBIs. Carson Koin struck out six in six innings for the win. Quinten Leamon fired a four-inning two-hitter with seven Ks in Game 2. Sam Briggs and Ben Briggs both had three hits and three RBIs while Bartlett had two hits and two RBIs. Ty Yorton added two hits and Kasen Wendel drove in two. BASEBALL: FREELAND OUTDUELS BOBCATS It was a pair of tight games, but both went Freeland’s way as the Falcons swept a key Tri-Valley Conference Red doubleheader from John Glenn, 4-1 and 4-1. Gunner Mezey delivered two hits for Glenn in the opener while Chase Young drove in the lone run with a sacrifice fly. Hayden Ruff had two hits in the nightcap for Glenn (9-7, 2-5). GOLF: GARBER WINS 9-HOLE EVENT Essexville Garber claimed top honors at the Hemlock 9-Hole Tournament at Valley View Farms, topping a field of six teams. Devin Dueweke, Aaron Theisen and Lucas Schiefer all tied for runner-up honors with matching 41s for the Dukes. Jonah Williams placed seventh at 42 and Jax Anderson eighth at 43. Garber came in at 165 to win the team title by nine shots over Midland Bullock Creek.
