BASEBALL: WESTERN HOLDS ON TIGHT Suddenly, every game has a championship feel to it for Bay City Western. And the Warriors are coming through when it counts. No. 1-ranked Western scored crucial 7-1 and 2-0 victories over Davison, keeping itself in the thick of the Saginaw Valley League title hunt. “These were two big games as we head to the final week of SVL play,” Western coach Tim McDonald said. “We’re focusing on what we can control, and our guys have bought into that.” Western (21-3, 15-3) needs a sweep of Mount Pleasant and Bay City Central – plus one loss from front-running Midland Dow over its final eight league games – to get in on the league championship. That prospect hung in the balance as Davison threatened an upset Wednesday in Game 2. But Western pitcher Jaxon Jenkins refused to budge, firing a timely one-hitter with seven strikeouts for the shutout. “There was zero margin for error in a tight game, but he never blinked,” McDonald said. “It was a huge performance for us.” Western scored a run in the second and one in the seventh in inch ahead. Jack Sequin, Talan Debo and Preston Kolm delivered Western’s only hits while Cal Plarske had a key RBI. Mikey DeLuca ripped two doubles in a three-hit, three-RBI performance in Game 1. Plarske knocked two hits and Sequin drove in two runs. Brayden Simmon notched the win with four innings of one-hit ball while Brady Vrable got the save with three innings of one-hit relief. BASEBALL: GLENN BACK TO WINNING WAYS John Glenn got back on the winning track, notching 8-4 and 11-2 victories over former league rival Birch Run. Starters Gunner Mezey and Andrew Shufelt delivered strong pitching performances for the sweep, with Chase Young notching the Game 1 save with two innings of relief. Hayden Ruff ripped two hits and drove in two runs in the opener while Cam Burch tripled and tallied two RBIs for the Bobcats (11-8). Burch added two hits in the nightcap while Cam Wilber, Brody Riedlinger and Wyatt Jeske each drove in two runs and Nick Naylor lashed a triple. BASEBALL: STANDISH KEEPS IT ROLLING No. 4-ranked Standish-Sterling moved closer to a Jack Pine Conference championship, sweeping Shepherd 10-0 and 8-5. The Panthers (19-0-1, 14-0) broke open a scoreless game in the fourth inning of Game 1. Trace Collins and Ben Briggs each rapped two hits while Sam Briggs blasted a home run. Preston Kann was dominant again with seven Ks in a six-inning two-hitter. Standish used a five-run fourth to take control of the nightcap. Sam Briggs didn’t allow a hit over three innings for the win. He delivered two hits at the plate while Jay Roper drove in two runs. BASEBALL: BATS BREAK OUT FOR PINCONNING Pinconning exploded not once but twice, outslugging Midland Bullock Creek 20-15 behind a pair of seven-run innings. Alex Shelagowski ripped three hits while Cole Dzurka and Isaiah Hoffman each drove in three runs and joined Landen Enciso, Calvin Holland, Zach Laures and Alex Rivard with two hits apiece. The Spartans (13-9, 6-7) led 7-3 through three innings before Game 2 was halted by darkness. BASEBALL: QUICK WORK FOR COUGARS No. 14-ranked Bay City All Saints delivered a pair of mercy-ruled victories, downing Saginaw Arts & Sciences 13-0 and 15-0 in non-league play. Jeffrey Hartman and Noah Potvin combined for a four-inning no-hitter with 11 strikeouts in Game 1 while Brenner Gansser fired a one-hitter with five Ks in the three-inning nightcap. Hartman had three hits and three RBIs in the opener while Sawyer Eager and Levi Johnson each added two hits and two RBIs. Jack Wetters ripped three hits with a home run and drove in four runs in Game 2 while Dylan Paul added a pair of RBIs for the Cougars (17-2). TRACK: GLENN RELAY IS TOPS IN TVC John Glenn can dash with the best of ‘em. The Bobcats put their sprinting skills on display in the Tri-Valley Conference Red Championship, capturing first place in the 4x100 relay and claiming five other Top 6 finishes in dash events. Jonny Ford, Dylan Wood, Arrow VanWagoner and Bradley Boyk roared to the conference crown in the 4x100, clocking in at 43.84 seconds. The Bobcats posted just one other winning performance, as Karter Box won the TVC Red pole vault title at 11-6. But there were plenty of Top 6 showings, helping Glenn to fourth place in the team standings at 80.5 points. Boyk took second in the 100 (11.13) and sixth in the 200 (23.29), Ford was sixth in the 100 (11.61) and VanWagoner second in long jump (19-9) and fifth in the 200 (22.85). The 4x200 relay of Wood, Boyk, VanWagoner and Angel Arocha was runner-up (1:30.99). Lukas Gies took fifth in high jump (5-8) and sixth in long jump (18-4.25), Jimmy McCrum was second in high jump (6-0) and Alex Armstrong place fifth in the 110 hurdles (16.17). Essexville Garber finished sixth in the team standings with 34 points but featured a league champion in Seth Betzold. The sophomore captured the 3200 crown in 9:51.13 and placed fourth in the 1600 (4:35.16). Robert Raushi placed fourth in discus (125-11) for the Dukes.
