BAY CITY, MI – A look at the high school boys sports scene in Bay County for April 17, 2025. BASEBALL: PINCONNING DELIVERS IN FINAL CUTS It was now or never, and Pinconning chose wisely. After getting just three hits through six innings, the Spartans delivered five hits and four runs in a dramatic seventh inning, rallying past Gladwin 5-4. “We played a solid game all-around with some great defense and pitching – and we finally put something together in the seventh,” Pinconning coach Casey Pashak said. Much of the Jack Pine Conference crossover was a pitching duel between Pinconning’s Blake Kareus and Gladwin’s Brayden Dee. But Gladwin came through with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to build a 4-1 advantage. Pinconning made its final swings count. Zach Laures and Cole Dzurka doubled while Alex Shelagowski and Landen Enciso singled in the top of the seventh. But the pivotal blow came from Alex Rivard, who lined an RBI single that plated the go-ahead run. Laures finished with three hits in the win while Shelagowski drove in two runs to support Kareus in his complete-game effort. There would be no final-inning dramatics in Game 2 as Gladwin held on for the 2-1 victory and the doubleheader split. Ryan Kowalczyk’s RBI single to score Isaiah Hoffman in the sixth was Pinconning’s only hit. Laures fired a four-hitter with seven strikeouts for the Spartans (6-5). Nick Charbonneau fired 5.1 innings of no-hit ball, striking out six in the Saginaw Valley League contest. But Carman-Ainsworth scored twice in the seventh inning and loaded the bases, putting the winning run on second before reliever Jose Costilla recorded the final out on the liner to Reed. Costilla delivered three hits and three stolen bases in the win while Cruz Beson knocked two hits for the Wolves. Central (4-5, 4-0) completed the sweep with a 5-1 win in Game 2, getting 10 strikeouts in four innings from Reed. Costilla, Paulino Perez and Wyatt Stachowiak each knocked two hits. BASEBALL: WESTERN ROLLS PAST HERITAGE Owen Dominowski drove in seven runs from the No. 9 hole and Luke LaCourse registered more strikeouts than outs as No. 2-ranked Bay City Western swept Saginaw Heritage 18-2 and 12-0. LaCourse pitched 2.2 scoreless innings with nine strikeouts, including four in the first inning. Dominowski delivered four hits with seven RBIs in the Saginaw Valley League twinbill. The Warriors (10-0, 4-0) also got two hits apiece from Jack Sequin, Gabe Wegener, Brayden Simmon and Preston Giorgis in the opener. Jimmey Sequin and Cal Plarske each drove in three runs in Game 2. Jack Sequin struck out six in three innings on the hill and Jaxon Jenkins added two innings of scoreless relief. BASEBALL: GARBER ON A HOT STREAK Essexville Garber is riding a five-game winning streak after 15-0 and 15-4 wins over Birch Run in Tri-Valley Conference Red action. The Dukes (6-2, 4-1) got strong pitching performances from Alex Mularz and Nolan Collins in the sweep. Mularz tallied three hits and two RBIs in Game 1 while Anthony Solinski and Dakota Inda each had two hits and three RBIs. Mularz added three hits in Game 2 while Solinski had two hits and four RBIs and Nathan Foret drove in three runs. BASEBALL: STANDISH ROLLS TO SWEEP No. 5-ranked Standish-Sterling took care of business with 10-0 and 9-1 wins over Beaverton in a Jack Pine Conference crossover. The Briggs boys came up big in Game 1, with Sam Briggs knocking three hits with three RBIs and Ben Briggs tallying two hits and two RBIs. Preston Kann and Carson Koin each added two hits. Kann picked up the win with six Ks over 4.2 shutout innings. Koin rapped two hits and joined Kann and Brock Bartlett with two RBIs apiece in Game 2. Caleb Emans fanned eight in a three-hit pitching gem. GOLF: WESTERN, CENTRAL IN TUNE Bay City Western and Bay City Central got the 18-hole season under way at the Lapeer Tune-Up Tournament at Metamora Country Club. Western placed fourth in the team standings at 335, led by a third-place individual finish from Nash Leonard at 77.
