BAY CITY, MI – A look at the high school sports scene in Bay County for April 18-19, 2025. Bay County coaches are asked to submit results, highlights and comments the night of each event by emailing lthomps2@mlive.com. GOLF: WESTERN WINS SPARTAN INVITE Being a man down doesn’t mean Bay City Western isn’t at full strength. The Warriors are able to plug several combinations of players into their lineup and still play like champions. And they did just that while capturing top honors at Pinconning’s Spartan Invitational at Maple Leaf. “We have the deepest team we’ve had since I’ve been here,” Western coach Mike Eddy said. “With Drew Goik out with illness, it was great to see Rowan Smithgall and Chase Schmidt step up and my seniors Nash Leonard and Logan Gehoski play solid.” Western posted a team score of 300 to lead the nine-team field. Smithgall shared medalist honors with a 71 while Leonard placed fourth at 74, Gehoski sixth at 76 and Schmidt eighth at 79. Essexville Garber (304) was runner-up just three strokes back, fronted by co-medalist Jonah Williams at 71. Aaron Theisen was fourth at 74 and Devin Dueweke seventh at 77. Lucas Schiefer rounded out the scoring at 82. Pinconning (326) took third as a team, paced by Cole Brady in third at 72 and Garrett Zehr in ninth at 80. Owen O’Laughlin carded 85 and Jake Rau 89 for the Spartans. John Glenn (357) placed seventh with Will Stopyak at 83, Mason Hayes 90, Hunter Piorkowski 90 and Blake Piorkowski 94. Bay City Central (380) finished eighth with Kaiden DuRussel at 89, Ryan Marciniak 94, Lucas Nieman 98 and Jackson Miller 99. GOLF: WISENBACH PACES WOLVES Austin Wisenbach posted a Top-20 finish in the 13-team Tawas Two-Day Tournament, leading Bay City Central to 10th place in the team standings. Wisenbach shot matching rounds of 85 on Day 1 at Red Hawk and Day 2 at Huron Breeze for a 170 total, good for 15th place. Freshman Cole Kozielski came up big with 194 for Central while Joseph Gibson came in at 195 and Jake Thompson 215. Freshman Kaiden DuRussel also contributed with a 98 in Round 2 for Central. SOCCER: GLENN EDGES OUT OGEMAW John Glenn controlled the action, but the outcome remained in doubt. Despite dominating possession and shots on goal, the Bobcats had to stand tall to the end for a 2-1 win over Ogemaw Heights in a game shortened by lightning. Ogemaw managed just three shots in the contest but made one count on a free kick from 30 yards out. Meanwhile, Glenn peppered the Ogemaw keeper with 25 shots, getting a goal from Nora Goaley off a rebound and another from Carli Johnson, set up by a corner kick from Ella Wallaker and a pass from Isabella Snyder. TENNIS: CENTRAL, GLENN CALL IT EVEN Bay City Central and John Glenn enjoyed similar performances in a double-dual at Central, both losing 8-0 to Midland but battling each other to a 4-4 draw. Central swept the singles flights against Glenn, getting wins from No. 1 Lauren Klawon, No. 2 Lorena Tapia, No. 3 Aleeya Lorenz and No. 4 Edy Maciejewski. “The highlight was Lorena Tapia getting her first varsity win as a singles player,” Central coach Jane Klawon said. “She played very consistent and smart tennis.” Glenn ran the table in doubles against Central, landing wins from No. 1 Michelle Guo and Elyse York, No. 2 Adele Neophytou and Gabbie Bishop, No. 3 Kelsey Hartman and Maddie Dabrowski and No. 4 Pearl Norton and Jayna Darbee. TENNIS: GARBER EXCELS IN TRIANGULAR Essexville Garber got big wins when it count, earning a win over host Midland Bullock Creek and a tie with Mount Pleasant in a triangular meet. “We frequently talk about every flight being as important as every other flight because each match is worth one team point,” coach Joe Ricard said. “Our very inexperienced No. 4 doubles team came through with a huge win to seal the tie with Mount Pleasant.” Winning two matches on the day for the Dukes were Josie Reyes in singles and Marlee Garwick and Danielle Livingston, and Sienna Sanchez and Addy Causley in doubles. Jayce Woods, Emmalyn Bergevin and Ella McCauley each landed one singles win while Marissa Espinoza and Marlee Debo scored a doubles win. SOFTBALL: GARBER REMAINS UNDEFEATED Essexville Garber rolled to 16-1 and 10-2 victories over Laker, extending its season-opening winning streak to nine games. Kara Kotenko notched the pitching win in both games while Delenya Charbonneau fired three scoreless innings. Grace Zwetzig, Alexa Bowman and Alyssa Bowker each drove in three runs in the opener. Ella Kokaly had three hits and two RBIs in the nightcap while Ava Wagner drove in two runs and joined Zwetzig and Bowker with two hits. BASEBALL: GLENN RALLIES IN SEVENTH John Glenn had to make its final swings count once again. The Bobcats trailed host St. Clair Shores Lakeshore 5-4 entering the seventh inning but plated three runs for a clutch 7-5 win in Game 2. Couple with a 10-1 win in Game 1, the Bobcats earned the non-conference sweep. Hayden Ruff walked and Cameron Burch doubled to start the seventh-inning uprising. Remington Ranck followed with game-tying sacrifice fly, the go-ahead run scored on an error and Garrett Hilborn laced an RBI single for the 7-5 margin. Ruff, Burch and Hilborn each knocked two hits in the Game 2 win. Jayden Brenay shined in the opener, allowing two hits over five innings for the win on the hill and blasting a two-run home run at the plate. Ranck also came through with two hits for the Bobcats (8-1).
