SOFTBALL: PINCONNING STUNS STANDISH It’s hard to top a game-changing home run. But Layla Foco did it with a game-winning triple. Foco showed her clutch gene in two crunch-time at-bats for Pinconning, capped with a walk-off three-bagger that sprung the Spartans to a stunning 10-9 victory over archrival Standish-Sterling. “Layla definitely came through when we needed a hit,” first-year Pinconning coach Madison Wright said. “She’s always a consistent hitter, for sure.” The loudest of Foco’s four hits came in timely fashion. After Standish-Sterling built a 7-4 lead in the top of the fourth, Foco bombed a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning that quickly got Pinconning back in contention. “The team was ecstatic to get a homer and put them back in the game,” Wright said. “You could feel the energy on the field and in the dugout after that shot.” But there were more fireworks to follow. The game rocked back and forth, with Standish-Sterling scoring twice in the seventh to knot the game at 9-9, setting the stage for final-swing dramatics. Elley Shoultes drew a one-out walk and Foco followed with her walkoff triple. Foco also came through in the pitching circle, coming on in relief in the first inning after the first five Standish batters walked, building a 4-0 advantage. Foco finished with eight strikeouts in seven innings of relief for the win. Emma McQuarter also had a big game for the Spartans with three hits and two RBIs. Shoultes, Kailee Rugenstein, Laken Gibala and Elizabeth Sylvester all added two hits to Pinconning’s 17-hit attack. Standish got three hits, including a home run, from Jaylynn Yenna while Paige Vallad rapped three hits and Adi Fetters two. The Panthers were leading 13-5 through four innings in Game 2 before the contest was halted by darkness. SOFTBALL: GARBER BATS GO WILD Essexville Garber cranked out 32 hits on the day, powering past Alma 10-0 and 18-3 in Tri-Valley Conference Red action. The Dukes (7-0, 4-0) got a huge day at the plate from Grace Zwetzig, who had two hits in Game 1 then knocked four hits with two doubles and a home run in Game 2. The senior finished with seven RBIs in the doubleheader. Alyssa Bowker ripped four hits, J.J. Shooltz three and Ella Kokaly two in the opener and each drove in two runs. Kara Kotenko fired a one-hitter with nine Ks. Freshman Delenya Charbonneau notched her first varsity victory in Game 2, striking out five in the four-inning game. Sadie Lapan drove in three runs and Kokaly delivered three hits. Lapan, Bowker, Ava Wagner, Paige Mendyk and Claire Adamowski each rapped two hits. SOFTBALL: REESE TAKES TWO FROM GLENN Reese delivered some timely hitting and took advantage of 22 walks on the day for 10-3 and 11-1 wins over John Glenn. Glenn got a triple from Hadley Keister, who joined Gabi Mezey with two hits in Game 1. Keister added an RBI double in Game 2 as Glenn got five hits from five different sources. Ashtyn Frost sparked Reese with two doubles in the opener while Breelie Louis and Sydney DuRussel each added two hits. Jaidyn VanOcten led with two RBIs in Game 2. The Rockets for four strikeouts from Louis in the Game 1 win while Kylie Soper fanned three in the nightcap. SOFTBALL: ALL SAINTS DROPS A PAIR Bay City All Saints ran into a hot-hitting Saginaw MLS, dropping 17-2 and 13-4 decisions in non-league play. MLS banged out 35 hits in the doubleheader. Kara Schular highlighted the day for All Saints with a home run, one of her two hits in Game 2. Kellen Proctor and Gali Costilla also had two hits in the nightcap. Val Costilla delivered two hits in Game 1 and Clara Barrigar added one. BASEBALL: STANDISH SWEEPS PINCONNING Standish-Sterling got two identical pitching performances to shut down Pinconning, sweeping the rivalry series 9-0 and 8-1. Sam Briggs and Carson Koin put up matching numbers on the mound, each allowing just two hits over six scoreless innings while striking out nine. After owning a tenuous 1-0 lead through three innings of the opener, the Panthers caught fire to pull away. Preston Kann drilled three hits while Brock Bartlett drove in two runs and joined Rylee Blanchard with two hits. Ben Briggs tagged two hits in Game 2 while Koin tripled with two RBIs. Pinconning managed just four hits on the day, with Landen Enciso delivering two and Cole Dzurka and Zach Laures one apiece. BASEBALL: PITCHING RULES FOR GARBER Essexville Garber got back-to-back pitching gems from Camden Parker and Nathan Foret, cruising past Alma by matching 11-1 scores in Tri-Valley Conference Red action. The Dukes (4-2, 2-1) saw Parker fired a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts in the opener then Foret toss a two-hitter with 13 Ks in the nightcap. Foret tagged three hits with two RBIs in Game 1 while Alex Mularz, Charlie Maze, Matthew Pawlaczyk, Anthony Solinski and Dakota Inda each rapped two hits. Garber scored in all five innings of Game 2 as Colton Jacobs drove in three runs. Maze scored three times and Mularz roped a double for the Dukes. BASEBALL: GLENN RALLIES FOR SWEEP John Glenn had one win in its pocket. But the Bobcats had to dig deep to make it two. Trailing Reese by a run in the final inning of Game 2, Glenn rallied for a dramatic 8-7 win in walkoff fashion. Coupled with a 6-2 win in the opener, the Bobcats earned the non-conference sweep. Glenn was down 7-6 for its final at-bat, but Cam Burch walked then scored on a game-tying double by Remington Ranck. Cameron Wilber followed with a game-winning single. Ranck and Wilber each had two hits in the contest while Blake Bach delivered a three-hit performance. Glenn (6-1) got two hits from Hayden Ruff in the opener while Gunner Mezey and Chase Young each tallied two RBIs. Andrew Shufelt struck out five for the win on the hill. TENNIS: ONE WIN BUT IT’S A DANDY Bay City Central only managed one win in its match with Lapeer. But the Wolves walked off feeling like champions. Lauren Klawon provided a tone-turning victory, rallying from a one-set deficit, staving off two match points in the second set and dancing off with an inspiring 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 triumph at No. 1 singles. “Her stamina prevailed in the third. The hard work she put in during the offseason showed today,” coach Jane Klawon said. “And she has the best teammates cheering her on. When you’re the last Wolf playing, your teammates are locked in with you.” The junior leader was greeted by her teammates as she exited the court and hoisted onto their shoulders as the Wolves had a 7-1 loss worth celebrating. TENNIS: THREE-SET WIN HIGHLIGHTS BCW Bay City Western came up short in a 6-2 decision to Flint Powers in Saginaw Valley League action, but the Warriors had their highlights. No. 4 doubles Ava Schmidt and Khloe Schmidt delivered in dramatic fashion, coming back from a set down to win in three. The Western duo took the third-set tiebreaker 10-2. Lauren Gehoski and Kate Friedle added Western’s other win at No. 3 doubles, prevailing 6-1, 6-4. Payton Martin delivered a memorable effort at No. 1 singles for the Warriors. She rallied after dropping the first set 6-3, winning the second set 6-4 before falling 10-4 in the third-set tiebreaker. TENNIS: DUKES ARE ROAD TOUGH Essexville Garber showed it doesn’t need homecourt advantage to succeed, winning its first road match 6-2 at Clio. “The experience the girls had last year is paying off in the ability to play relaxed and not get too ruffled when struggling,” Garber coach Joe Ricard said. “The season is now very compact and they need to get better every day.” Ella McCauley, Josie Reyes and Jayce Woods scored singles wins for Garber while Sienna Sanchez and Lucy Houghteling, Aubree Gross and Addy Causley, and Danielle Livingston and Marlee Garwick captured doubles wins. SOCCER: STANDISH STELLAR YET AGAIN Five games into the season, Standish-Sterling hasn’t given up a goal. And that’s the best recipe for a five-game winning streak. The Panthers turned back Ogemaw Heights 4-0 in Jack Pine Conference action, giving them a stunning 22-0 scoring advantage on the opposition this season. “Our defensive unit is covering really well,” coach Kacey Bentley said. “They are backing each other up when balls do get through. We’re reminding them it’s the small details that will do us in if our focus isn’t on task.” Analeis Ming maintained the hot hand, scoring three goals in the victory while Charlotte Ming added one. First-year player Luci Waldie came through with her first assist while Addison Schaenzer and Lily Thurlow also added assists. Lydia Arbuckle recorded nine saves in the shutout. SOCCER: GARBER FINDS GROOVE Essexville Garber shook off a slow start with a strong finish, powering past Saginaw Swan Valley 5-1 in Tri-Valley Conference Red play. Emma Kelly, Claire Arnold and Olivia Aguirre each delivered one goal and one assist in the win while Avery Nearman and Isla Anderson scored one goal apiece. Rylee Jatczak came through with a strong game, not only starring defensively but handling the corner kicks and notching two assists. SOCCER: SLOW START COSTS BCC Bay City Central found its footing after a poor start, but the Wolves couldn’t overcome the damage in a 6-3 loss to Lapeer. Lapeer raced to a 4-0 first-half lead but had to fend off Central to the end. Brynn Corrion scored two goals and Marcela Facundo one for the Wolves. Ava Garcia came through with two assists. Delaney Hopkins had a busy night in net with 20 saves.
