BAY CITY, MI – A look at the high school sports scene in Bay County for April 23, 2025. Bay County coaches are asked to submit results, highlights and comments the night of each event by emailing lthomps2@mlive.com. BASEBALL: ALL SAINTS MOWS DOWN RIVALS Allow zero runs and there is zero chance to lose. Bay City All Saints put that practice to use for dominating 13-0 and 11-0 victories over Whittemore-Prescott, getting back-to-back masterful pitching performances from Jack Wetters and Drew Andrzejewski. “While our bats were certainly hot, our pitching stole the show with Jack and Drew,” All Saints coach Brian Good said. “They got ahead in counts and hit their spots for two nearly perfect pitching performances.” Wetters struck out 11 and allowed one hit in four innings in the opener while Andrzejewski fired a no-hitter with nine Ks in the four-inning Game 2. All Saints (9-2) scored nine first-inning runs in the opener. Dylan Paul drove in four runs in the contest while Sawyer Eager rapped two hits and matched Andrzejewski with two RBIs. The Cougars broke open the nightcap with six runs in the third and five in the fourth. Eager knocked three more hits and Andrzejewski tallied two hits and two RBIs. Wetters added two hits and Brenner Gansser drove in a pair of runs. RELATED: No. 5 Standish-Sterling remains unbeaten TRACK: GLENN MAKES A RUN FOR IT John Glenn kept things interesting in its Tri-Valley Conference dual at Frankenmuth, with the boys hovering within 15 points in a 76-61 setback to the league power. Glenn saw a pair of personal-bests posted by winners Jimmy McCrum in high jump (6-0) and Karter Box in pole vault (11-6). Arrow VanWagoner raced off with the 200 meters (23.33), 400 (52.83) and long jump (19-11), Bradley Boyk won the 100 (11.38) and Alex Armstrong was tops in the 300 hurdles (43.92). Glenn also captured the 4x100 and 4x200 relays. The Glenn girls dropped a 106-31 contest but saw some highlights. Journey Frasier won the 300 hurdles (51.78) and the 100 hurdles in a PR of 17.75. Annabelle Werner was first in pole vault (9-6) and set a new PR of 13.59 in the 100. TENNIS: WESTERN WINS ‘ON THE FLY’ The Bay City Western tennis team got a makeup date thrown at them on short notice, but the Warriors are good at taking things as they come. The Warriors took the court and posted a 6-2 victory over Davison in Saginaw Valley League action. “The girls did a good job grinding out the win,” Western coach Mike Rohde said. “We’ve lost a lot of practice with weather and makeups this year. But the girls are learning to make adjustments on the fly and today they did that effectively.” Western got singles wins from No. 1 Payton Martin 6-1, 6-2 and No. 3 Madi Offenbecker 7-6, 3-6, 10-8. The doubles crew swept their flights with No. 1 Mylie Reder and Delaney Grzegorczyk 6-1, 6-2, No. 2 Ally Clifford and Bri Hennard 7-5, 6-4, No. 3 Lauren Gehoski and Kate Friedle 6-3, 6-0 and No. 4 Ava Schmidt and Khloe Schmidt 6-1, 6-1. SOFTBALL: COUGARS CAN’T PRESERVE LEAD It was a rough day in the field for Bay City All Saints as nine errors paved the way to 8-7 and 18-5 losses to Au Gres. The Cougars built a 7-2 lead in Game 1 only to see Au Gres chip away then take the lead with a four-run sixth. Marin Proctor struck out 11 batters for the Cougars and also delivered two hits and three RBIs at the plate. Kara Schular and Gali Costilla had two hits apiece. Au Gres used that momentum to plate 10 first-inning runs in Game 2. Proctor rapped three more hits while Costilla and Clara Barrigar each added two. SOFTBALL: GLENN POWERS TO SWEEP John Glenn took care of the task at hand with 17-1 and 17-0 victories over Vassar in a pair of three-inning non-conference games. Drue Busch handled the pitching duties, allowing one hit in each game and notching a combined 10 strikeouts in the two wins. Busch and Gabriella Mezey each drove in three runs in Game 1 and joined Kate Cataline and Kenzy Bach with two hits. Mezey blasted a home run in Game 2 and joined Busch, Bach and Harmonie Kuch with two hits apiece. Busch and Bach each notched three RBIs while Mezey, Kuch and Olivia Duprey tallied two each. SOCCER: CENTRAL PLAYS POWERS TOUGH Bay City Central waged an impressive battle with traditional power Flint Powers before coming up short in a 5-2 loss. The Wolves hung tough in the Saginaw Valley League showdown despite playing shorthanded. “The illness bug cost us a couple starters, but the backups stepped up,” Central coach Brandon Hopkins said. “While the outcome wasn’t what we wanted, the rookies got some valuable experience. I’m proud of all their efforts.” Freshman Noella McClanahan scored her first career goal unassisted while Brynn Corrion added a goal off an Ava Garcia assist. Delaney Hopkins notched 25 saves for the Wolves. GOLF: PINCONNING SETS JACK PINE PACE In the first season of Jack Pine Conference golf, Pinconning has quickly emerged as the team to beat. The Spartans soared to victory in the JPC showdown hosted by Gladwin at Sugar Springs, posted a team score of 323 that was 17 shots ahead of the rest of the 10-team field. Cole Brady captured medalist honors while leading Pinconning to the win with a 74. Garrett Zehr placed fourth at 80, Jake Rau took sixth with 84 and Owen O’Laughlin finished eighth at 85.
