SOCCER: BCW MAINTAINS HOLD ON BCC RIVALRY
Bay City Western was looking for something to spark its season.
A game with Bay City Central just may have done the trick.
The Warriors unleashed a spirited effort on their Saginaw Valley League foe, posting a 3-0 victory and extending their incredible hold on the cross-town rivalry.
“It was a very competitive game,” first-year Western coach Jesse Maldonado said. “They have some speed, but we played as an overall team. It was fun to watch. We came out attacking more and kept the ball in their end most of the game.”
It marked the seventh straight meeting that Western won by shutout, bumping its all-time series lead to 39-4-5. The Warriors have not lost to Central since 2011.
With the two sides owning similar records, this year’s matchup raised some doubts. But Western (4-8-1, 2-3) erased them with opportunistic play. The Warriors took a 1-0 lead into halftime when Riley Gilles scored off a corner kick from Audrey Kundinger.
Gilles sent a corner kick in to Kenzie Jacobs to make it 2-0 in the second half and Ella Harrison completed the scoring moments later. Lily Ciesla registered the shutout in goal for Western, which halted a five-game winless streak with the victory.
“Some injuries have slowed us down this year. But with only one still out, we’re getting back in our groove,” Maldonado said. “It would be nice to take some motivation from this and get a winning streak going.”
Central (4-6, 1-5) is caught in a six-game losing streak since its 4-0 start.

SOCCER: GARBER POWERS PAST GLENN
Essexville Garber took another important step toward its Tri-Valley Conference Red dreams, turning back John Glenn 5-1 to maintain first place.
Garber (8-1-1, 5-0-1), coming off a tie with Frankenmuth and loss to Midland, got back on the winning track by getting goals from five different sources. Olivia Aguirre, Iva Bebow, Carly Arnold, Avery Nearman and Claire Arnold each scored one goal in the win. Emma Kelly and Rylee Jatczak notched assists while Natalie Fodrey posted the win in goal.
Glenn (8-4-1, 3-2-1) saw its five-game winning streak come to a halt.
LACROSSE: WOLVES ON HISTORIC ROLL
Bay City Central equaled a program record with its seventh win of the season, downing St. Johns 6-3 on the road.
“We came out slow and sluggish but fought our way through,” Central coach Eric Anderson said.
John Britton and Byron Wilson scored two goals each while Maveric Anderson and Max Miller tallied one goal apiece as Central (7-3) won for the seventh time in the past eight contests. Joe Britton notched the win in goal.
The Wolves went 2-0 at their annual showcase on Saturday, downing Sault Ste. Marie 5-4 and West Bloomfield 7-2. John Britton scored six goals, Trace Atkin four and Miller and Aidan Hubbard one each in the tourney. Joe Britton and Taylor Robinson each recorded a win in goal.
The Wolves matched the 2007 team with their record-tying seven wins on the year.\
BASEBALL: ALL SAINTS SHUTS DOWN KINGSTON
Bay City All Saints put up plenty of runs and allowed only one, powering through Kingston 9-1 and 11-0 to continue its stunning start to the season.
Jack Wetters and Brennan Pease combined on a two-hitter with eight strikeouts in the opener and Drew Andrzejewski and Jeffrey Hartman followed with a combined no-hitter with five Ks in the nightcap as the pitching dominated.
“We have six guys who I feel can go out on any given day and win us a ballgame,” All Saints coach Brian Good said. “That’s a true luxury to have at any level of baseball.”
All Saints (13-2) put eight runs on the board in the first three innings of Game 1. Henry Essex drove in four runs and joined Wetters and Sawyer Eager with two hits.
The Cougars hit the eight-run mark in just two innings of Game 2, with Dylan Paul leading the attack with three hits and three RBIs. Wetters and Hartman each had two hits and two RBIs and Eager added two hits.
BASEBALL: CENTRAL GIVES DOW A BATTLE
Bay City Central battled No. 15-ranked Midland Dow on near-even terms but couldn’t pull off an upset, dropping a pair of 7-6 contests to the Saginaw Valley League leader.
“Overall, it was major improvement,” Central coach Brady Neitzel said. “It was two tough losses, but it was the best doubleheader of baseball we’ve played so far.”
The Wolves (5-12, 5-5) trailed 6-0 in Game 1 before scratching its way back in contention, drawing within one after a five-run fifth. Paulino Perez, Jose Costilla and Nick Charbonneau each delivered one hit and one RBI for Central. Cam Reed pitched 6.2 strong innings for the Wolves.
Central roared to a 5-1 first-inning lead in Game 2 but couldn’t hold off the Chargers, who took the lead in the sixth.
Aaron Kain ripped four hits for Central while Costilla added two. Charbonneau and Joseph Gibson each drove in a pair of runs. Charbonneau and Costilla were solid on the hill to give the Wolves a shot.
BASEBALL: GARBER SWEEPS PAST LAKER
Essexville Garber came through in the clutch to complete a 13-2 and 9-8 sweep Laker in non-conference play.
After Laker scored three runs in the fifth, the Dukes countered with three in the sixth then held on for the one-run victory in Game 2. Matthew Pawlaczyk got the final out for Garber, stranding the tying and winning runs on base.
Nathan Foret homered in the win and joined Alex Mularz, Ryan Brey, Aidan Zwetzig and Ethan Pett with two hits. Brey, Pawlaczyk and Dakota Inda each drove in two runs. Colt Talaski ripped four hits with a home run for Laker.
Garber (9-4-1) erupted for an eight-run second inning to take charge in Game 1. Anthony Solinski delivered a monstrous game with two home runs in his two-hit, five-RBI performance. Brey tagged two hits while Mularz and Foret each had two RBIs. Inda and Colton Jacobs combined on a two-hitter for the Dukes.
SOFTBALL: ALL SAINTS PUTS UP A FIGHT
Bay City All Saints couldn’t get a monumental upset but put up an epic fight, falling shy to Kingston 5-4 and 7-4.
“Despite the errors, this was a big step forward for our program,” All Saints coach Jason Proctor said. “Kingston has destroyed us year after year, but we played a very competitive doubleheader tonight.”
The Cougars (4-9) scored three runs in the top of the seventh of the opener, only to see Kingston rally for three in the bottom of the seventh for the walkoff win. Kingston’s Brianna Rayl sparked the rally with a home run and Andie Hurd delivered the game-winning RBI single.
Val Costilla had three hits, including an RBI double for All Saints while Clara Barrigar tripled and Madelyn Olson executed an RBI squeeze bunt. Marin Proctor struck out five in the complete-game pitching performance.
All Saints trailed 7-1 in Game 2 before chipping away but ran out of innings in the 7-4 loss. Kara Schular had two hits with a triple and seven other batters added one hit apiece. Sandy Leser pitched five innings and Proctor finished with two scoreless frames in relief.
SOFTBALL: DOW TOO TOUGH FOR CENTRAL
Midland Dow had too much firepower for Bay City Central, rolling to 11-0 and 13-5 wins in the Saginaw Valley League twinbill.
Central (5-8, 3-5) was blanked in the opener, with Kallie Kaczmarek and Maleah Russell coming through with the team’s only hits. Alivia Kukla struck out six from the circle.
The Wolves led 4-1 in the second inning of Game 2 before Dow roared back. Kukla, Lauren Baranek and Jorja Kiley each had one hit and one RBI in the setback.
