Bay County prep roundup: Title showdowns set in Bay County Championships

BAY CITY, MI – A look at the high school sports scene in Bay County for April 11, 2025. Bay County coaches are asked to submit results, highlights and comments the night of each event by emailing lthomps2@mlive.com. BASEBALL: WESTERN, GLENN READY FOR FINALE Two-tiome defending champion Bay City Western powered through its side of the bracket, securing a spot in the title game of the Bay County Championship. The Warriors take on John Glenn in the championship game for the third straight year. The title showdown is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Bay City Central’s McGregor Field. Central hosts Pinconning at noon in the third-place matchup while Essexville Garber hosts Bay City All Saints in the second-place matchup. Here’s a recap of Friday’s pool play. RELATED: Bay County Championship schedule and results Garber 15, Pinconning 5 Garber iced the win with a six-run fifth inning and saw five players collect two hits apiece. Charlie Maze and Dakota Inda had two RBIs and joined Nathan Foret, Ryan Brey and Ethan Pett with two hits. Anthony Solinski drove in three runs in the win. Foret struck out eight on the hill. Pinconning got doubles from Blake Kareus and Ryan Kowalczyk and two RBIs from Isaiah Hoffman. Western 19, Pinconning 0 Jack Sequin belted a pair of three-run home runs in a six-RBI performance for Western. Owen Dominowski drove in three runs in the win while Gabe Wegener, Aiden Richard and Preston Kolm each tallied two RBIs. Brayden Simmon spun two hitless innings for the win. Landon Cooley collected the lone hit in the three-inning game for Pinconning. All Saints 11, Central 8 All Saints led 8-1 then countered a Central rally with a pivotal three-run fourth, holding on for the program’s second win in Bay County Championship history. Sawyer Eager ripped three hits with two RBIs from the leadoff spot for All Saints. Jack Wetters drilled three hits while Dylan Paul drove in two runs and joined Gavyn Aikens with two hits. Aaron Kain tallied three RBIs and matched Jose Costilla and Paulino Perez with two hits for Central. Nick Charbonneau drove in two runs. Sebastian McGill tossed three innings of scoreless relief to give the Wolves a chance. John Glenn 6, Central 4 Jayden Brenay bombed a three-run home run in the fourth inning, giving Glenn a 4-0 lead that would hold up. The Bobcats added two crucial runs in the seventh inning. Glenn managed just three hits, also getting singles from Nick Naylor and Remington Ranck in the win. Andrew Shufelt worked five innings on the hill for the win. Jose Costilla knocked three hits for Central while Nick Charbonneau added two. Cam Reed struck out six in five innings of two-hit ball. Western 10, Garber 1 Western broke open a 2-0 game with a seven-run fifth inning, taking charge while locking up a spot in the title game. Jack Sequin and Owen Dominowski both doubled while Gabe Wegener drove in two runs for the Warriors. Jaxon Jenkins fired three innings of no-hit ball, striking out eight for the win. Charlie Maze and Dakota Inda had hits for Garber. John Glenn 9, All Saints 4 Cameron Burch fired 4.1 innings of two-hit ball, striking out seven for the John Glenn victory. He came through at the plate as well, knocking two hits with two RBIs. Remington Ranck drove in three runs and Garrett Hilborn tripled for the Bobcats. Drew Andrzejewski, Brennan Pease and Levi Johnson each had hits for All Saints. SOFTBALL: GARBER GOES FOR FIVEPEAT Essexville Garber vies for a fifth consecutive crown when it takes on Bay City Western in the Bay County Championship. Garber and Western went 2-0 in pool play Friday to set up the championship showdown, their third in five seasons. Pinconning faces All Saints in the third-place matchup at 10 a.m. and John Glenn meets host Bay City Central at noon in the second-place matchup. The title game is set for 2 p.m. at McGregor Field. Here’s a look at pool play results from Friday. Glenn 13, All Saints 11 Glenn erupted for a 10-run second inning then held on for the victory. Drue Busch notched the win in the pitching circle and delivered three hits with two RBIs. Harmonie Koch laced three hits while Gabi Mezey added two. Kellen Proctor and Gali Costilla drove in two runs apiece for All Saints while Kara Schular drew three walks and scored three runs. Western 17, Glenn 3 Calee Lijewski ripped four hits to spark Western’s 16-hit outburst in the win. Zoe Ziehmer, Kyra Smith and Charlotte Waibel each had two extra-base hits while Morgan French had two hits and three RBIs. Leah Schumann added two hits to back winning pitcher Ziehmer. Gabi Mezey blasted a solo home run for Glenn. Central 8, Pinconning 4 The contest was tied 4-4 before Central came through in the clutch with two runs in the sixth and two in the seventh. Katelyn Hemingway had two hits and two RBIs while Alivia Kukla, Heidi Dahn and Maleah Russell each had a hit and an RBI. Kukla struck out eight for the win. Elley Shoultes, Kailee Rugenstein and Parker Ramsay each rapped two hits for the Spartans. Garber 9, Pinconning 2 Kara Kotenko struck out 11 in the circle and drove in three at the plate to power Garber to victory. J.J. Shooltz, Sadie Lapan and Ella Kokaly each knocked three hits for the Dukes while Ava Wagner added two. Pinconning got seven hits from seven players, with Emma McQuarter and Kailee Rugenstein each driving in a run. Garber 10, Central 4 Garber built an 8-0 lead en route to the win over Central, clinching a spot in the title game. Grace Zwetzig delivered two hits and two RBIs while J.J. Shooltz and Alyssa Bowker each had two hits for the Dukes. Kara Kotenko fired a two-hitter with 10 Ks in the win. Katelyn Hemingway rung up 15 strikeouts for Central. She also knocked a double while Eli Maciejewski roped a triple for the Wolves. Western 7, All Saints 5 Miranda Tacey struck out 11 in a complete game performance as Western edged All Saints. Western trailed 3-2 until putting three runs on the board in the fifth inning. The Warriors added crucial runs in the sixth and seventh to earn a spot in the title game. Kyra Smith knocked two hits in the win while Abbey Berger had two RBIs. Kellen Proctor had three hits and two RBIs for All Saints and also pitched a complete game. SOCCER: STANDISH BLANKS TAWAS Standish-Sterling continued to shine defensively, pitching a 3-0 shutout against Tawas. Keeper Lydia Arbuckle refused to budge, notching six saves in the victory. “Lydia stepped up tonight, keeping Tawas off the board with our third shutout,” Standish coach Kacey Bentley said. “Defensively, we are covering the opposing attack very well.” Analeis Ming punch in all three goals for the Panthers, getting two assists from Lily Thurlow and one from Ariel Johnson. BASEBALL: STANDISH OPENS WITH SWEEP No. 6-ranked Standish-Sterling opened the season in impressive fashion, sweeping Saginaw Heritage 8-0 and 7-1. Pitching ruled the roost as the Panthers rang up 15 strikeouts in the opener then got a complete-game gem from Caleb Emans in the nightcap. Emans fired a three-hitter with five Ks. Sam Briggs spun four innings of one-hit ball with 10 Ks in the opener while Carson Koin and Brock Bartlett contributed to the shutout. Briggs and Trace Collins each knocked three hits in Game 1 while Rylee Blanchard added two hits and joined Quinton Leamon with two RBIs. The Panthers quickly put five runs on the board in the first inning of Game 2. Collins and Blanchard each knocked two hits in the win while Leamon added two more RBIs.
