BAY VILLAGE, Ohio -- In a decision that has sparked excitement within the community, the Bay Village City School District has officially appointed Bridget Dougherty as the new head coach of the Bay High School Rockettes.
The decision was made during the March 17 Board of Education meeting when the board unanimously approved Dougherty’s hiring, marking a new chapter for the dance team.
Dougherty steps into the role following the departure of Liz Baumgartner, who announced her resignation in December, in order to focus on her studies.
Having served as the interim head coach since Baumgartner’s exit, Dougherty is no stranger to the Rockettes: She has dedicated the past three-and-a-half years to the team as a volunteer coach.
Matt Spellman, athletics and activities director for Bay Village Schools, shared insights into the selection process.
A committee of teachers, parents, community members, and Spellman interviewed three candidates for the position.
“During the interview process, it was evident that Coach Dougherty has a deep passion for teaching and leading the Rockettes,” he said.
“She values the program’s traditions while striving to help the team reach its full potential.”
Dougherty’s commitment to the Rockettes is evident in her extensive involvement with the team. From managing social media accounts to organizing uniforms and leading practices, she has taken on a multitude of responsibilities.
As interim head coach, she successfully organized the first annual Rockettes Showcase and has been actively involved in community events, ensuring that the team remains a vibrant part of Bay Village.
In her vision for the Rockettes, Dougherty emphasizes the importance of building a strong sense of community within the team.
Dougherty will work to create an environment where every dancer feels valued and supported.
From her prior experience as a dancer, she knows it is essential for them to grow in confidence and skill, all while balancing their school, dance and personal lives in a healthy way.
Dougherty’s connection to the Rockettes runs deep; she was a member of the team throughout her high school years She graduated in 2021.
“Being a Rockette had a significant impact on me,” she said.
“I knew from my freshman year that I wanted to become the head coach one day. My passion for the Rockettes has only grown as I have worked toward this role.”
Currently pursuing a college degree in family and consumer science education, Dougherty is eager to bring her knowledge and experience to the forefront as she leads the team into a new season.
Added Spellman: “We are excited for Coach Dougherty to begin this new chapter as head coach for the Rockettes and look forward to a great season ahead.”
