EastEnders has broadcasted further heart-wrenching scenes featuring Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley) as he grapples with his dementia diagnosis, leading viewers to worry about his wellbeing. The beloved character, who first made his appearance in 1992, unexpectedly returned to Walford at Christmas after a 26-year hiatus, reuniting with his best mate Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden). However, it wasn't long before it became evident that Nigel was concealing a significant secret, which he later revealed to Yolande Trueman (Angela Wynter) - he had been diagnosed with early-onset dementia. Nigel went on to explain that his return to the Square was motivated by a desire to reconnect with his past before his memory faded. He had initially resolved to keep this from Phil, but following Phil's tragic suicide attempt during the BBC soap's 40th anniversary celebrations last month, he felt compelled to disclose his health situation. In Monday's episode (March 17), poignant scenes unfolded as Nigel forgot that Phil is currently residing in a mental health facility, calling out for him while searching the house. His memory was jogged only when Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) dropped by and enquired if he had received any news from Phil at the mental health unit, reports Plymouth Live . Later in the day, Nigel informed Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) that he was experiencing a migraine. He then ventured to the location where he once owned a video shop in the 90s, gazing upon it with a sense of nostalgia. Linda Carter, portrayed by Kellie Carter, who is clued up on Nigel's medical condition, had an emotional encounter with him that led to him breaking down in tears. She offered support to her new pal over a portion of chips, during which he shared the struggles he was facing with his fading memory. Yet upon Nigel's return home, he encountered difficulty trying to warm his meal and succumbed to the pain of a burn from the oven. Alarmed EastEnders viewers are now deeply concerned about Nigel’s worsening state and fear for his well-being. On platform X, one distressed fan commented: "Oh no Nigel's storyline is getting more coverage, meaning it will be soon before it gets worse @bbceastenders #EastEnders." Another explained the gravity of Nigel’s decline: "Nigel forgetting that Phil is in the MH Unit. His dementia is getting worse #EastEnders." A fellow viewer expressed their dread, saying: "I am not ready for this Nigel story to escalate. Paul Bradley is knocking out of the park but it's so so sad. #EastEnders." While another admirer lamented the tribulations faced by a character they cherish: "Absolute legend can't believe what's happening to one of my favourite here bless Nige", and yet another simply voiced their concern with a poignant "Oh Nige". EastEnders airs Monday - Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and iPlayer
