UTAH-1870-PHOTOGRAPHS (Undated) -- Rephotography -- capturing the same scene from the same location after a span of time -- enables scientists to track long-term changes such as alpine tree-line rise, shoreline erosion and glacial retreat. A group of scientists and adventurers recently backpacked into the Uinta Mountains in Utah to re-create a series of photographs made in 1870 by William Henry Jackson, a photographer who worked for the U.S. Geological Survey. By Kim Beil.

FRUGAL-TRAVELER (Undated) -- While the ski slopes may still be open across much of North America, it's time to think about next season. The major passes, including Epic and Ikon, as well as the smaller Mountain Collective, have recently announced sales for the 2025-26 season. Here's a look at next season's offerings. By Elaine Glusac.

HOTELS-PET-CARE (Undated) -- Gone are the days when hotel guests traveling with their dogs had to sneak them into their rooms or pack their own chew toys. The welcome mat is out, and many hotels are going all out to please four-legged guests. Some provide custom bedding, toys and fresh-cooked food. Others go further with dog-sitting, walks and even wilderness hikes. By Julie Weed.

TALL-SHIP-REFUND (Undated) -- When an injured traveler has to back out of a $1,450 volunteer gig aboard a historic ship, the company says it's just the middleman and the terms and conditions on its website don't apply. Tripped Up by Seth Kugel.

AI-TRIP-PLANNING (New York) -- When I was asked to see what artificial intelligence gets right and wrong about visiting New York City, I was deeply curious and felt well qualified for the assignment -- I've been a resident of Manhattan since 1989, a frequent city tour guide for friends and family, and a journalist who has written about technology since the 1990s. I sampled several AI-planner sites with the same vacation request. By J.D. Biersdorfer.

EUROPE-BY-RAIL (Undated) -- Using a hodgepodge of rail sites, I booked a two-week itinerary of high-speed trains from Milan to Stockholm, with stopovers in Zurich, Berlin and Copenhagen, Denmark: five cities in five countries. With tips from local friends rather than sightseeing checklists, I was ready to cross the continent. By Laura Rysman.
INDIA-BOOK-FESTIVALS (Jaipur, India) -- While India may appear consumed by Bollywood, cricket and phone screens, literature festivals are blooming, bringing readers and writers together in hilltop towns and rural communities, under the cover of beachside tents or inside storied palaces. The festival season typically runs from October to March, when the weather is pleasant in much of the country. By Anupreeta Das.
