BCCI Hands Big Relief To Chairman Of Selectors Ajit Agarkar After Controversial Asia Cup Moves: Report
@Source: timesnownews.com
The BCCI has reportedly extended chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar's contract till June 2026. Agarkar was roped in by the BCCI in June 2023, and India achieved tremendous results, especially in shorter formats, under his tenure. The Men in Blue played the final of the ODI World Cup 2023, losing to Australia, but bounced back to end the ICC Trophy drought by winning the T20 World Cup 2024 and the following ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year. Agarkar's role as chief selector came under the scanner after a series of defeats in Tests where India lost 3-0 to New Zealand at home and suffered a 3-1 drubbing to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy that led to the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in Tests. India, however, did well on the England tour and secured a 2-2 draw. Agarkar made some bold moves as chairman of selectors, but not all were appreciated by the cricket fraternity. His decision to sideline Mohammed Shami and Sarfaraz Khan on the England tour was not well-received. Similarly, the omission of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer from the Asia Cup squad created a massive uproar. According to a report in the Indian Express, Agarkar's contract was renewed ahead of the IPL 2025. “Under his tenure the Indian team had won titles and had seen transition (of the Tests and T20) too. The BCCI had extended his contract till June 2026 and he had accepted the offer a few months back,” a BCCI official told The Indian Express. Major Changes Await In Senior Selection CommitteeThe report adds that the BCCI is mulling over making a few changes in the senior selection committee that comprises Agarkar, SS Das, Subroto Banerjee, Ajay Ratra, and S Sharath. The board is likely to remove Sharath, who was promoted to the senior selection panel in January 2023, and will complete four years, and replace him with a new face.
