The Board of Control for Cricket in India BCCI is reportedly considering revising its family stay policy for players and support staff during overseas tours. The development comes after star batsman Virat Kohli recently voiced his disappointment with the current regulations emphasizing the importance of spending time with loved ones during high-pressure international matches.
Policy Change in the Works
According to reports the BCCI may allow family members to accompany players and support staff for longer periods than the existing policy permits provided prior approval is obtained. Currently the policy allows family members including spouses and children under 18 to join players for one visit per series format-wise lasting up to two weeks if the tour extends beyond 45 days.
The proposed changes came in the wake of a disappointing tour of Australia earlier in 2025 after which the BCCI introduced a stringent 10-point disciplinary guideline. The new rules influenced by concerns raised by head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma regarding team cohesion significantly curtailed family presence during overseas tours. The restrictions which were temporarily eased during the Covid-19 pandemic were reinstated following a review meeting.
Kapil Dev Weighs In
Former Indian captain Kapil Dev weighed in on the debate stating ldquoMy view is yes you need family. But you also need a team all the time.rdquo During the recently concluded Champions Trophy in Dubai several players including Kohli Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami had their families present but stayed separately from the team hotel bearing the expenses themselves.
Upcoming England Tour
India is set to tour England after the conclusion of the Indian Premier League IPL. The five-match Test series will commence from June 20 at Leeds. The second Test will be held at Edgbaston Birmingham followed by the third and fourth Tests at Lords London and Old Trafford Manchester respectively. The fifth and final Test is scheduled to take place at the Kennington Oval London starting on July 31.
A Balanced Approach
Under the proposed relaxed policy the BCCI would cover shared accommodation for approved visitors while other expenses would be managed by the players. Visits would need to be scheduled in advance and coordinated with the coach captain and GM Operations. Any exceptions to the revised policy would require pre-approval from all three.
While opinions remain divided the BCCIs willingness to reconsider its stance could indicate a more balanced approach towards player welfare and team dynamics.
