Virat Kohli is India’s most successful captain in Test cricket. Since taking charge of the Indian team in December 2014 to stepping down from the role in January 2022, Kohli led India in a total of 68 Test matches and won 40 of them, which is the most by an Indian. Kohli, who was expected to feature in a five-match Test series against England starting June 20 in Leeds, took to Instagram on Monday (May 12) afternoon to announce his retirement from the five-day format of the game. Kohli’s decision to quit Test cricket with immediate effect at the age of 36 came as a shock for fans around the globe. But now, a couple of days after his retirement from Tests, it has been reported that he wanted to become captain of the Indian Test side again and was promised as well by the BCCI for the same, but later the board changed its mind. According to a report, the 36-year-old was given a hint that he may be made the captain of the Indian Test cricket team again during the 2024-25 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. A video report by Sports Today stated that Kohli was hinted at a return to captaincy, and this happened after India lost the day-night Test inside three days in Adelaide under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy. “At least people close to him do seem to suggest that he was given sort of a hint that he would be getting captaincy after Adelaide. But then things changed,” the report said. The report mentioned that after India lost the away series with a scoreline of 3-1, there was a ‘change in tone’, and the thought process of the team management was that it should look at a young captain. The report added that Kohli was still hopeful of getting back the captaincy, and for that reason he also played a Ranji Trophy match for Delhi against Railways at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, as mandated by the BCCI. But in April, he was told that he was being as a player, and then he decided to retire.
