BDCA men’s: Colts cruise into grand final with seven-wicket preliminary final win over Dalyellup

Colts cruised into the Bunbury and Districts Cricket Association men’s first-grade grand final with a seven-wicket qualifying final win over Dalyellup at Bunbury Recreation Ground on Saturday. The reigning premiers continued their perfect record over last year’s beaten grand finalists in one-day games between the pair this season by chasing down their total of 7-180 in the 45th over. The result has seen the minor premiers book a place in the season decider for a fourth year running while sending Dalyellup, who finished the home and away season in second, into a preliminary final clash with Hay Park. One of the biggest moments of the game came in its second over, when Colts veteran Josh Topliss induced Bradman May to edge through to wicketkeeper Sam Allen, sending the competition’s leading run-scorer on his way without scoring. Dalyellup’s disastrous start continued when No.3 Vinnie Poller also departed without scoring after being run out by Tom Buchanan, which Adam Bilston helped them pull out of by contributing 31 from 43 deliveries. After Bilston fell lbw to Tim Hutchison (1-43 from 10 overs), Country XI star Cody Ryan played a critical knock for the visitors, making his way to 59 from 84 balls before he was pinned on the pads by Cruize Ciallella (2-28 from 10 overs). Tail-enders Liam Renton and Brandon O’Rourke took up the mantle of getting the visitors to a competitive score after Ryan’s dismissal, with Renton clubbing three sixes in an enterprising 38 not out from 39 balls and O’Rourke finishing on 19 not out from 20 balls. As they have done all season long, Colts’ spinners provided a wicket-taking threat and gave away few opportunities to score. Ciallella, Clayton Caltsounis (1-28 from 10 overs), Hutchison and Morgan Baxter (1-11 from two overs) were all in on the act. The hosts were given a strong start in the second innings by openers Caillin Blackwood (49 from 70 balls) and Christian Pitcher (36 from 68 balls), who put together an 89-run opening stand. The pair fell in relatively quick succession alongside captain Hutchison (21 from 35 balls) to give Dalyellup some hope, but veterans Murray Goodwin and Buchanan combined from there to see Colts home with an unbroken 54-run partnership. Goodwin finished 42 not out from 54 balls — taking his aggregate in one-day games against the visitors this season to 259 in four innings without being dismissed — and Buchanan (21 not out from 40 balls) played a more than able supporting hand. Dalyellup did have some success in the second-grade qualifying final between the two sides, winning by four wickets after bowling Colts out for 79. In the lower grades, Capel beat Eaton by 67 runs in third-grade, Harvey-Benger bowled Eaton out for just 19 to secure a nine-wicket fourth-grade win and Dalyellup Black defeated Rising Stars by eight wickets in fifth-grade.
