Bears morning report: QB Caleb Williams won't play in Sunday's preseason opener

Bears quarterback Caleb Williams won’t play in Sunday’s preseason opener against the Dolphins, head coach Ben Johnson said Friday morning.
“We feel very good about this plan going forward, and that’s what we’re going to do,” he said.
Williams will have an intense throwing session early Sunday morning. Quarterback Tyson Bagent will play the first half against the Dolphins.
The Bears plan to sit nine starters on each side of the ball, Johnson said.
Johnson said he entered training camp wanting to put more emphasis on joint practices, where he could control certain scenarios — including how often Williams got hit — than in games.
Williams and the Bears’ starters will likely make an in-game appearance at some point this offseason, Johnson said. It would figure to be next week; teams rarely play their starters in the third preseason game.
Williams threw 20 passes in offseason games last year. He said Thursday that he liked playing at least a little bit in preseason games so that his first game action doesn’t come in Week 1 of the regular season.
“I’ll be out there whenever Ben says, and we’ll go out there and play however many plays he tells us to play,” he said.
Johnson spoke Friday morning before the team’s joint practice against the Dolphins at Halas Hall. The Bears will practice against the Bills next Friday before hosting them in a preseason game two days later.
