BENGALURU: Leader of Opposition in Assembly R. Ashoka on Tuesday blamed Bengaluru incharge and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar over stampede at the Chinnaswamy stadium on June 4 leaving 11 dead and as many as 70 injured and accused Shivakumar of inviting people to Vidhana Soudha then to the Chinnaswamy stadium where functions were organized to felicitate players of Royal Challengers of Bengaluru (RCB), a franchise cricket team, winning Indian Premier League-2025 trophy. On the floor of the Assembly in the ongoing monsoon session, Ashoka demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and Minister of Home Dr G. Parameshwar owing responsibility over the stampede and asked the State Government to investigate the stampede by sleuths of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Ashoka also wanted the State Government to constitute a house committee over the stampede to provide justice to the deceased families. Referring to the statement of D.K. Shivakumar on June 4, Ashoka said Shivakumar stated “I congratulate the cricket team, the team members are arriving, we are discussing honoring them, finally, we will sit with the Home Minister and police officials and discuss.” Shivakumar gave a call to RCB fans to gather at the Chinnaswamy stadium, Ashoka said and questioned “If it was not a government programme, then, why did Shivakumar ask fans to arrive at the stadium.” Ashoka stated “It confirms the role of the State Government in RCB fans celebrations in Bengaluru city.” Shivakumar later spoke in favour of crazy fans which all confirms the ruling Congress government has an official role in the celebration which led to the tragedy, Ashoka stated. Continuing, Ashoka said Shivakumar went to the airport and wished the RCB players on their arrival to Bengaluru. Later, Shivakumar made a video holding the RCB team flag and stated “This does not bring dignity to the Deputy Chief Minister and the State Government.” Adding, he said, “When Deputy Chief Minister has protocol, holding the flag of a liquor baron (Vijay Mallya) team was not right.” Ashoka criticized Shivakumar for trying to transfer the credit of RCB fans celebrations to the State Government and sought an apology from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to the people of the State over stampede.
