Bernhard Langer Suffers Masters Heartbreak on Precipice of History
@Source: newsweek.com
Bernhard Langer's playing career at the Masters Tournament came to an end on Friday when he missed the cut with a 3-over score. However, the legendary player walked away with his head held high as he battled to the end and even came close to getting a tee time over the weekend.Langer entered the 36th hole at 2-over for the tournament, which would have allowed him to make the cut. He simply needed a par on the final hole to make the weekend.The two-time Masters champion's chances were severely diminished, though, when he sent his approach shot into the crowd to the left of the green.But the German did not give up. He found the green with a wedge shot that left him with an 11-foot putt for par.Unfortunately, he could not hole the par putt as his shot just missed the cup by inches. Langer carded a five for the hole and said goodbye to the crowd one last time."Coming up 18 was mixed emotions because I was still inside the cut line," he said after finishing the round, "and even when I made bogey, I wasn't sure I'm totally out of there or not because I actually thought 3-over would make the cut, as windy as it was today. I thought it was harder than yesterday. But it doesn't look that way."Had he made the cut, Langer would have added another record to his legendary resume. At 67, he would have become the oldest player to make the cut at The Masters, a mark currently held by Fred Couples, who made the cut in 2023 at age 63.Both the round and the week in general were very emotional for Langer, who even admitted to being on the verge of tears."It was a very special last two days for me," he said, "even starting off walking to the first tee yesterday, I got a standing ovation and the people really, you know, applauded. I almost teared up and almost started crying right there, and I said, come on, get it together, you've got some golf to play."Bernhard Langer's Masters Tournament career can be summed up in 41 appearances, with 27 cuts made, two wins (1985 and 1993) and nine other top 10s. His most recent cut made came in 2020, when he tied for 29th as a 61-year-old.It is good to note that of his 14 missed cuts at Augusta National, 10 came after he turned 50 and began his career on the Senior circuits, where he has become one of the most successful players in history.More Golf: Bryson DeChambeau Corrects Report of President Trump Masters Text
