Bhuvneshwar Kumar On India's Pace Transformation: 'All Credit Goes To...'

Senior India and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fast-bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar has credited former skipper Virat Kohli for the pace transformation in the country. He said Kohli brought in a mindset of ‘winning everywhere’ and not ‘going with the flow’, which pushed the Men in Blue to focus on their pace resources.
Kohli captained India from 2014 to 2022 in red-ball cricket. Under him, the team won 16 away Tests – the most so far, ahead of Saurav Ganguly, who had won 11. Kohli was also the first-ever Asian captain to win a Test series in Australia in 2018-19 — all of it while remaining unbeaten in a Test series at home.
Most of the away wins were led by the fast-bowling attack, which included newcomers like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, plus the old guard of Bhuvneshwar, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav, among others.
“I will give all credit to Virat Kohli for Team India’s transformation in Test cricket and the fast bowling revolution. He brought in that mindset of winning everywhere — not just going with the flow. That mindset of Virat was very special,” Bhuvneshwar said, in a candid interview with RCB shared on social media.
He also spoke about his struggles with injuries, like in the 2015 and 2019 World Cups.
“When you get injured on such a big stage, you understand that the injury is a part of the game, but sometimes it is very difficult to explain to yourself ‘why’ at such a time. So it was tough, of course,” he explained.
But for now, RCB is also seeing the best of Bhuvneshwar Kumar. He has taken 12 wickets in 10 innings at an average of 28.25 — his second-best in eight years. However, the pacer is not thinking about an India comeback.
“The way I have approached myself in the last few years, personally, I will say that I never make any goals. There is no aim. I just keep going match by match, tour by tour or whatever. I think that helps me a lot. To stay in that moment, to stay in the present. And to give my best in the trophy or tournament that is going on,” he added.
