JACKSON – The Western baseball team kept putting up multi-run innings in a sweep of Northwest on Thursday, winning the first game 10-0 in five innings and the second 20-12.
The Panthers had three in the first, three in the second and four in the fourth inning of Game 1.
Game 2 saw the Panthers bat around in two of the first three innings to take a 14-0 lead, then add a four-run sixth.
In Game 1, DJ VanRiper was 2-for-4. Andrew Parrott was 2-for-3, and Lincoln Levy drove in a pair of runs.
Brody Parrott held the Mounties to two hits, striking out eight in five innings on the mound for Western.
The Panthers scored five runs in the first inning of Game 2, as VanRiper started thing off by beating out a bunt single and later scored when a bloop by Andrew Parrott dropped in in centerfield. Luke Nally and Levy followed that with back-to-back RBI singles, and Brody Parrott doubled to drive in two.
VanRiper singled to open the second, and he and Luke Herrington both scored on grounders later in the inning to make it 7-0. Brody Parrott followed that with a two-run double.
A series of errors and a wild pitch led Western to score five runs in the third, and Jackson Luke added a sacrifice fly to drive in a run in the fourth.
On the mound, Andrew Parrott was in total control for the Panthers early, retiring the first five batters he faced an allowing just an infield single to Dennis Graham in the second.
Northwest began to figure him out later, and get some runs on the board. Jack Edwards, having drawn a lead-off walk in the third, later scored on an infield single by Avery Anspaugh. Sean Dancer hit an RBI groundout to score a run, and Chase Wyers added a bloop single to score two more as part of a three-run fourth.
Northwest then scored seven in the fifth to avoid the run rule. Gabe Christner stole home and Parker Ryan followed with a two-out RBI single. After a pair of walks, Anspaugh drove in two runs with a single. An error and a wild pitch scored two more runs before Christner came to the plate again and singled to score two runs.
Levy homered in the top of the sixth and a Cody Spitzer single later in the inning scored two more runs, but Northwest got one run back in its half of the inning off a sacrifice fly from Dancer.
VanRiper, Nally and Levy all had three hits in the second game for Western. Brody Parrott drove in four runs. Nally and Levy each drove in three.
Graham, Ryan, Anspaugh and Johnathon Osterberg each had two hits in Game 2 for Northwest.
