Birmingham City could explore Premier League transfer to kickstart recruitment drive
@Source: birminghammail.co.uk
Birmingham City have been credited with an interest in Bournemouth goalkeeper Mark Travers this summer as plans to upgrade elements of their playing squad intensify following the conclusion of the League One season. Blues signed off for the summer with a 2-1 win over Cambridge United on the final day of the campaign on Saturday, ensuring they finished on 111 points and claimed the League One title. After a break, the players will return to the club's Henley training base and begin to accelerate their preparations for the new season, in which they'll be competing in the Championship. The loan spells of Kieran Dowell, Ben Davies and Luke Harris have ended, although the deal with FC Twente for Alfons Sampsted is expected to mean he remains at St Andrew's. The short-term contracts offered to defenders Grant Hanley and Myung-jae Lee in the January transfer window have also expired. Blues, not returning to the second tier simply to make up the numbers, are expected to be busy again this summer, topping up the newly formed squad for which much the groundwork was completed last summer following the club's relegation. As a part of that recruitment drive, they signed two goalkeepers to compete with one another - Ryan Allsop and Bailey Peacock-Farrell. Brummie Allsop eventually claimed the gloves after Northern Irish international Peacock-Farrell had initially been given the nod, but he played just two more league games after September - and they came in March when Allsop was sidelined through injury. It's expected that another stopper is on Blues' agenda this summer, and that could prompt doubt over the future of Peacock-Farrell, who otherwise had to make do with run-outs in cup competitions for the most part of last season after struggling to making a case for keeping his place in the starting XI. Now, there are reports suggesting that Travers could be a player of interest; Bournemouth loaned him out to Middlesbrough in the January transfer window, after he'd played second fiddle to Chelsea loanee Kepa Arrizabalaga at the Vitality Stadium - and there is a chance that the Spaniard stays put on a permanent basis moving forwards. Travers has previously had loan spells with Swindon Town and Stoke City, but he was briefly first choice for the Cherries and played 46 times under Scott Parker as they secured promotion back to the Premier League in 2022.
