Birmingham man was part of gang who chased teen and punctured his lung with machete

An armed gang who used a weapon to attack an unarmed teenager in a Warwickshire town have been jailed. The gang of four including Alanzo Scarlett, of Pershore Road in Birmingham , chased a then 18-year-old in Clifton Road in Rugby town centre shortly before 5pm on July 31, 2020. They then attacked him with a machete causing multiple stab wounds. He was taken to hospital and required emergency surgery to repair a punctured lung. Read more: Three injured in three-car smash as one ploughs through railings Warwickshire Police officers scoured CCTV and identified Scarlett, along with Brian Ayamba Ashu and Cheetij Pun, both from Rugby. They also identified a fourth man, who cannot be named for legal reasons. Scarlett, 26, Ashu, 25, of Phipps Avenue, Rugby and Pun, 24, of Morton Gardens, Rugby and the unnamed man were all arrested, interviewed and subsequently charged with violent disorder and the machete attack. All four pleaded guilty to violent disorder at Warwick Crown Court earlier this year. Pun and Ashu also admitted section 20 assault - unlawfully and maliciously wounding or inflicting grievous bodily harm on another person. They appeared at the same court last Friday (March 28) where Scarlett was jailed for 26 months for violent disorder. Pun and Ashu were jailed for 36 months for violent disorder and 12 months for s20 assault, to be served concurrently. The fourth man will be sentenced at a later date. "The victim was fortunate not to suffer more serious injuries and the sentences reflect the severity of the incident. "I hope this serves as a deterrent for people who carry a knife. I promise your actions will have consequences and you will end up behind bars.”
