Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) has accelerated the greening of its phygital branches to 17 out of 55 units nationwide. In a recent statement to the media, Ayala-owned BPI said the branches have been certified as EDGE Green Bank Branches by the International Finance Corporation (IFC).“EDGE or Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies certification recognizes buildings that achieve at least 20 percent savings in energy, water, and embodied energy-efficient materials,” BPI said.Launched in 2023, BPI phygital banking is part of the bank’s sustainable and innovative banking programs.Phygital branches offer face-to-face interactions between clients and employees, especially for more complicated financial transactions like investments. Meanwhile, they also use digital tools to help clients process basic transactions.Recently, BPI opened its first prime phygital branch in Azuela Cove in Lanang, Davao City. Located near a body of water, the branch can remind clients to help take care of the environment by preserving its beauty despite modern developments.“This 25-hectare development is envisioned as a premier waterside business and residential district,” BPI said.“By combining our digital strength with the expertise of our financial advisors, we help clients grow their wealth and achieve financial wellness.”“Our phygital approach allows us to focus on understanding their unique needs and providing holistic solutions for their life goals,” BPI head of consumer banking Ginbee Go said.Moving forward, BPI said it plans to open 25 more phygital branches in the next five years as it pursues sustainability measures. These announcements came after BPI reported last January that it has helped reduce carbon emissions by 1.8 million tons per year through green financing.
