After years of debate and a state election heavily influenced by the call not to build a new venue, Nine reports the independent panel is set to recommend the new centrepiece stadium. It would be built instead of a rebuild of the Gabba, the initial plan, or using the aged Queensland Sports and Athletic Centre. Limited time offer. “Sources have now told me the independent panel has recommended the new stadium have 60,000 seats,” Nine’s Tim Arvier reported. “Significantly, sources also say that this is the proposal that will be taken to cabinet on Monday meeting. “The stage is set for the new 60,000 seat Victoria Park Stadium to be announced next week, along with a nearby athletes village surrounding the RNA Showgrounds. “While senior members of the government had wanted to pursue rebuilding the Gabba, the review panel found there was not enough time and the Gabba was too complex, making Victoria Park the best option. “There are still question marks, though, over the swimming venue, as Nine News reported on Tuesday, the independent review has rejected a Swimming Australia proposal to also build a National Aquatic Center in Victoria Park at Spring Hill, instead recommending the swimming be held at the Brisbane Live Arena at a new proposed site next to the Gabba. “But as we reported, it’s understood the government is still looking at all options, including a renovated Chandler.” The International Olympic Committee previously delayed the planned announcement of which sports will be selected for the 2032 Games due to Queensland’s lack of venue planning.
