Brandel Chamblee Slaps Down LIV Golf With Its Viewership
@Source: yardbarker.com
It has been well known that LIV Golf has received a lot of criticism because of its ties to the Saudi government through the PIF. It has also been reported that LIV Golf does not make a profit. Now the viewership LIV Golf brings is being put in the forefront by former champion and current PGA analyst Brandel Chamblee. As he points out the PGA regularly brings in millions of views while LIV struggles to break 100K. What Did Brandel Chamblee Say Exactly? On Twitter, Chamblee replied to Josh Carpenter’s tweet that revealed that the Player’s Championship playoff between McIlroy and Spaun garnered 1.5 million views. In his reply, he compared this to LIV’s viewership of their finale of 55K when it was airing on prime time. He then disparaged LIV as not mattering. “Compare this to LIV’s finale last year that concluded in prime time on the east coast with Rahm winning… which drew 55,000 viewers,” Chamblee wrote on Twitter. “People tune in to sports that matter.” Granted the 55K number is a bit off, but last year’s LIV Finale drew in 134K. It was this year’s final round of the opening event that brought in 54K views. This is most likely where the confusion comes from. However; one can’t help but look at these numbers and think that Chamblee’s point still stands. Meanwhile, the Players Championship has brought in a peak audience of over 6 million this year and last year. Chamblee Targets LIV Players Something else that Chamblee points out, in another tweet, is how he believes that the players who jumped on LIV sold out and are currently regretting that decision. “The PGA Tour is killing it and LIV is dying a slow costly death,” Chamblee wrote. “LIV players have seller’s remorse. They want the meritocratic cachet that competing at the highest level confers but they have shown in their choice to play for LIV that they’d rather have the money first and sue for the cachet. Trying to blur the distinction between gift and reward.” By now, it is well known that LIV Golf paid handsomely to recruit former PGA players. Some top players were offered a sum that was too good to deny. This is part of why LIV Golf’s finances struggle year after year. The Fans Also See This Brandel Chamblee leaves the last tweet with a few words that certainly ring true. “The audience sees right through them, and chooses to watch those that prefer to play for history and legacy.” It is very true that the audience sees right through the players. Dustin Johnson has seen diminishing support since he joined LIV, as well as his performance waning. Fans are pointing to the sign-on deal he got as the reason for his lackluster play for the past year. This is not limited to the fans alone, even some PGA players are critical of the ones who left. Scottie Scheffler hit out at LIV, saying: “If the fans are upset, then look at the guys that left.” What This Means Despite the PGA-LIV merger getting some support from the players with the idea of playing against each other again, it seems that some would rather just see LIV fizzle out. With talks stalling and hitting some roadblocks, it feels like the merger is becoming less and less likely. People are saying that relations are becoming more agreeable, but it looks like some hostility remains. Chamblee is certainly in the ladder category.
