Mascherano has hailed Messi as he rewrites MLS history
Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano has showered praise on Messi, acknowledging the growing concern surrounding the 38-year-old's workload.
Messi continued his astonishing run of form, scoring both goals in Inter Miami's 2-1 victory over Nashville SC on Saturday night, an unprecedented feat that saw him extend his streak to five consecutive MLS matches with a brace.
This remarkable achievement marks a new league record, solidifying his legendary status even further within Major League Soccer.
The Argentine maestro's latest masterclass at Chase Stadium helped Inter Miami to 11 wins, 3 draws (36 points), handing Nashville SC their first loss since April 19, thus ending their impressive 15-game unbeaten run across all competitions. Messi's goals, including his 69th career free-kick goal, were pivotal.
He is now just eight free-kick goals shy of tying the all-time record held by Brazil's Marcelinho Carioca (78), with Roberto Dinamite (74) and Juninho Pernambucano (72) also ahead on the illustrious list.
What Mascherano said
Following the match, Mascherano showered praise on Messi.
He said, "Obviously, we’re monitoring the situation daily and having ongoing conversations with him.
"We’ll find the right time to give him a break. What he continues to do is unbelievable - breaking records every three days. He’s the flag bearer of this team, our leader, and he sets the standard for how we compete. It’s truly a blessing to be part of this stage of his career,” he added.
With the win, Inter Miami has now won five consecutive MLS matches and remains unbeaten in their last five encounters with Nashville.
