Brian Harman Dedicates Texas Open Win Through Tragedy with Emotional Speech
@Source: newsweek.com
Winning tournaments usually carries a strong emotional charge for professional golfers. Brian Harman was no exception, as he won the 2025 Valero Texas Open with the ever-present memory of one of the most important women to him and his family.She is Cathy Dowdy, who was seriously injured a few months ago while trying to rescue Harman's six-year-old son who was swept away by a rip tide at the beach. Sadly, Dowdy has remained in a coma ever since, much to the dismay of her family and the family of the 2023 Open Championship winner.Harman himself explained Cathy Dowdy's heroic act a month after it happened when he met the press at the 2024 RSM Classic."My son was involved... he was out boogie boarding with one of his really good friends, got ripped out to sea by just a rip current. We get 'em here, it's not something that's abnormal, but this was an abnormally bad one," Harman said."Cathy Dowdy, a family friend...she went in the water, she went in the water after my son. He's 6. Couldn't get to him. Another gentleman coming down the beach, Crane Cantrell, jumped in. He makes it out fine; Cathy [got] injured really badly ... She's been in a coma for going on six weeks now and so obviously our world down here was kind of turned on its head."Just last Friday, when the now four-time PGA Tour winner was playing in the second round of the Valero Texas Open, Miss Cathy, as Harman called her, was placed in hospice care."I played with a heavy heart today. Miss Cathy ... she's not doing so good; just thinking about her all day...," Harman said after winning at TPC San Antonio."I'm going to dedicate this win to the entire Dowdy family. I know Cathy is fighting really hard right now, and we love y'all so much," he added.Brian Harman cemented his victory with consecutive scores of 66 in the first two rounds. His weekend performance was less stellar (72 on Saturday and 75 on Sunday), but it was enough to hold onto first place and eventually win the title.It is the Savannah, Georgia native's fourth PGA Tour title and first since the 2023 Open Championship. He has played in 10 events this season, making eight cuts. Prior to this weekend's victory, he had not posted a top-10 finish this year.More Golf: Scottie Scheffler in his Green Jacket, reveals Augusta National Partner
