Brian O’Driscoll and Tiger Woods lead tributes to Rory McIlroy for ‘inspiring the future’ after ‘phenomenal’ Masters win

BRIAN O'DRISCOLL joined in the long list of tributes to Rory McIlroy after his "phenomenal achievement" at The Masters. The Holywood star finally accomplished the career Grand Slam by beating Justin Rose in a play-off at the end of an enthralling final round on Sunday. McIlroy's victory - coming at the end of an 11-year wait for a major title - and his emotional reaction to it stole hearts and minds all over the world. And the tributes quickly followed both inside and outside of golf. Tiger Woods - a long-time ally of McIlroy with whom he set up Tomorrow Golf League - led these. The golfing GOAT said: "Welcome to the club @McIlroyRory. "Completing the grand slam at Augusta is something special. "Your determination during this round, and this entire journey has shown through, and now you're a part of history. "Proud of you" Graeme McDowell posted: "Rory enters golf's most elite club completing the Grand Sam. "He's one of the greatest I've ever seen playing this game. Wasn't hard to see he was special. "Proud to have been by his side a few times and watched him grow. Deserves to be called one of the greatest of all time." Fellow Irish star Leona Maguire said: "What a rollercoaster, what resilience. Congrats @rorymcilroy" Luke Donald was captain of Team Europe at the Ryder Cup in 2023, at which McIlroy led the charge in victory over the USA. And he said: "You could just see the Augusta demons leaving Rory when that putt went in. "What an unbelievable rollercoaster of emotions - pure sport at its best. "But history has been made and Rory has joined golf's most elite by completing the Grand Slam. "The green jacket is finally his." Even Phil Mickelson, who has had a back-and-forth vocal tit-for-tat with McIlroy since joining LIV Golf, gave the world No2 his kudos. He said: "What an incredible Masters. Congrats to Rory on his win and for completing the career grand slam. Amazing" Nick Faldo posted a pic of the two together alongside a touching tribute. He said: "I've never been put through the wringer of emotions like that in the commentary box. "So pleased for Rory McIlroy and proud to have known him all these years since he was a whippersnapper in the Faldo Series" 'INCREDIBLE DRAMA' The congratulations were far from restricted to the golf realm. Former Ireland rugby captain Brian O'Driscoll said: "That was a night that will live long in the memory. Incredible drama. "Amazing show of resilience to finally achieve your goal" Fellow rugby legend Johnny Sexton joked: "That took years off my life" alongside an emoji of a GOAT. Mayo GAA veteran Aidan O'Shea said: "Iconic!!! What a man!!!" while RTE broadcaster Jacqui Hurley remarked: "This is like a movie of the life of Rory McIlroy in one day" He was also praised by those in the political realm, both north and south of the border. Taoiseach Micheal Martin said: "The Green Jacket is yours Rory McIlroy! "A finish for the ages at Augusta to win The Matsers and complete a richly-deserved career Grand Slam. "Epic achievement by one of golf's greatest talents." First Minister for Northern Ireland, Michelle O'Neill posted: "Massive congratulations to Rory McIlroy on his incredible victory at The Masters - making history as the first ever from our island to win the prestigious Green Jacket! "A phenomenal achievement tat completes a career Grand Slam, placing him amongst the greatest ever golf players. "This is a huge moment in sporting history, and one that has filled everyone back home with great pride and that willl undoubtedly inspire future generations to chase their dreams "Enjoy the well-deserved celebrations, Rory!" And President Michael D Higgins said: "Congratulations to Rory McIlroy on winning The Masters and completing the career Grand Slam. "A truly outstanding achievement"
