Barack Obama and a person named Trudeau didn’t want to have Russia in, and I would say that that was a mistake. But that’s not quite correct.North America correspondent Michael Koziol writes: “Russia was actually removed by G7 members when Justin Trudeau’s predecessor, Stephen Harper, of the Conservative Party, led Canada. Harper said Russia should never be allowed to rejoin while Putin was president – a position that Trudeau continued.”Premier David Crisafulli says the government has been inundated with more than 10,000 expressions of interest within a day after expanding the state’s sports voucher program. The vouchers are available for children aged between five and 15, giving parents $200 towards sports costs. They are limited to one child per year. The state announced on Sunday it would continue the program, setting aside funding in the upcoming state budget and rebranding the vouchers from FairPlay to Play On.The Queensland government has set aside more funding in the state budget for children’s sports vouchers. “We are really focused on making sure that we can drive participation,” Crisfaulli told reporters yesterday. The government will separate the vouchers into two rounds for summer and winter sports, with the first round to open on August 4.Budget figures given to Treasury Officials indicate $62.5 million will be included in the budget each year for these vouchers – up from $40 million last year.Treasurer David Janetzki will hand down the 2025-26 budget on June 24.

It’s estimated more than 40,000 people are enslaved across the nation, subject to violence, threats, punishing hours, low pay, poor housing and restricted movements.Workers employed through the federal government’s the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility scheme – which employs people from nine Pacific islands and Timor-Leste – were found to be sleeping on benches and lining up at soup kitchens in Bundaberg, in Queensland’s Wide Bay-Burnett region. One PALM worker had metal lodged in his eye while using a staple gun, leaving him with significant vision loss. His employer forced him to continue lifting heavy bags of fruit against medical advice and didn’t apply for another visa on his behalf after the injury.LoadingHowever, ministerial intervention was sought and the Samoan man was granted permanent residency in 2023.The federal government has made several reforms to strengthen PALM, including pay parity, minimum hour rules and extra resourcing for the Fair Work Ombudsman. There have been 228 investigations of PALM-approved employers since mid-2019, resulting in $762,625 in recovered wages for 1937 workers, according to the ombudsman. The changes are a good start but worker mobility should be the top future priority, NSW anti-slavery commissioner Dr James Cockayne says: “We know from experiences overseas that tied visas – where workers are made entirely dependent on the discretion of their employer – are the number one correlate of vulnerability to modern slavery.”Premier David Crisafulli has defended his government’s decision not to extend the state’s electricity rebate. As we reported last week, Treasurer David Janetzki confirmed the Miles government’s $1000 electricity rebates would be scrapped in his first budget next week.LoadingYesterday, Crisafulli defended the move, saying his government could “do a little better” than electricity rebates to help Queenslanders struggling with the cost of living. “It’s safe to say that the budget will reveal a couple of things ... we are working to put downward pressure on electricity prices for everyone,” Crisafulli said.He said there would be “structural reforms” in the June 24 budget, which would bring down power prices, but did not elaborate further.Crisafulli added that the government would ensure small business owners and vulnerable people, including concession card holders, could still afford to pay their electricity bills. The scrapping of the $1000 rebate was last month cited as the primary reason Brisbane’s 1.9 per cent first-quarter CPI increase far exceeded other capital cities. An off-duty police officer was allegedly attacked by a group of teenagers on a Gold Coast tram after he attempted to stop one of them verbally assaulting staff.Police say the 39-year-old senior constable had finished his shift and was travelling home on the tram just after midnight on Saturday when he saw a girl verbally abusing a staff member. When the officer identified himself and attempted to intervene, he was allegedly attacked by the girl and three teenage boys. Suffering bruising and scratches, he left the tram at the next stop in Parkwood East to contact on-duty police.Officers stopped the tram at Parkwood and arrested a 15-year-old Oxenford girl, a 16-year-old Slacks Creek boy, a 17-year-old New Beith boy and a 15-year-old Yarrabilba boy. The girl has been charged with one count of serious assault police officer and will appear in Southport Children’s Court on Wednesday.Police say the 16-year-old Slacks Creek boy and 17-year-old New Beith boy will both be dealt with under the Youth Justice Act.Anyone who witnessed the incident or has footage is urged to come forward.9News Gold Coast
