Brisbane news live: Plane crash off coast ‘inevitable’ due to weight, failed propeller
@Source: brisbanetimes.com.au
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has handed down its findings into the ditching of a twin-engine Cessna after it departed Sunshine Coast Airport bound for the US.LoadingThe aircraft had been fitted with additional fuel tanks to last the distance, and given a special permit to conduct the ferry flight despite exceeding its maximum take-off weight.But when the left engine failed, its propeller created unexpected drag, forcing the pilots to alert authorities before ditching into the ocean.“The drag from the propeller combined with the weight of the fuel onboard meant a ditching was unavoidable as the aircraft was unable to maintain altitude on one engine,” the ATSB’s Dr Stuart Godley said in a statement.The pilots escaped in a liferaft and were rescued shortly after, however the aircraft sank and was not been recovered.Latest postsLatest postsAfter 13 federal elections as Australia’s leading voice on polling night, ABC’s election analyst Antony Green says the coming vote will be his last in an on-air role.Confirming the move on ABC’s News Breakfast after long-term rumours, Green said it was “time to retire”.Longtime ABC election analyst Antony Green.“I turn 65 this coming weekend. I work on a three-year election cycle with federal elections. I won’t be presenting elections in three years’ time when I’m 68, so this will be my last on-camera election for the ABC,” he said.“I’ll stay on for a couple of years, handing over work and doing other things, but essentially I’m deciding to retire and work less.”The popular presenter has been the leading authority in calling seats and analysing results as they come in on election night more than 30 years, covering his first election with the ABC in 1993.A breakfast TV interview has turned heated, as Liberal senator Jane Hume defended Opposition Leader Peter Dutton’s share purchases and called fellow panelist, Workplace Relations Minister Murray Watt, “the king grub” and “disgusting”.On Tuesday, reports revealed that during the global financial crisis in 2009, Dutton declared the purchase of shares in the big four banks the day before the then-Labor government unveiled a bank bailout. Under parliamentary privilege in Senate Estimates, Finance Minister Katy Gallagher questioned if it was “a happy coincidence” that the shares were bought just before share prices soared with news of the bailout.Hume was outraged by the suggestion that Dutton could have had advance notice of the bailout when asked about the allegation on Seven’s Sunrise.Loading“What I can say is that Peter Dutton was in the opposition at the time when this government policy was announced. Of course, he wasn’t briefed. This is a smear campaign from a desperate government … so they’ve made these accusations under the shroud of parliamentary privilege from Senate Estimates because they’ve run out of ideas.Hume became impassioned as she continued, calling Labor “the grubbiest people you will ever come across”, before directing a sledge at Murray Watt: “Murray, you are the king grub.”A bemused Watt replied: “That’s quite an accusation.”Hume said she didn’t know if the shadow cabinet would have been informed about the bailout because she hadn’t been elected yet. In a statement on Tuesday, Dutton’s office denied having access to sensitive information about the bailout.In reply, Watt said Dutton was yet to answer legitimate questions about the reports: “How many shares did he trade, miraculously the day before the government at the time bailed out the banks? How much profit did he make on those share trades? Most importantly, was he aware that the government was about to bail out the banks when he made the share trades?”Watt then raised reports in this masthead about Dutton’s extensive property portfolio, to which Hume replied: “Keep mentioning his name, Murray, every time you do our vote goes up. You’re disgusting.” The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has handed down its findings into the ditching of a twin-engine Cessna after it departed Sunshine Coast Airport bound for the US.LoadingThe aircraft had been fitted with additional fuel tanks to last the distance, and given a special permit to conduct the ferry flight despite exceeding its maximum take-off weight.But when the left engine failed, its propeller created unexpected drag, forcing the pilots to alert authorities before ditching into the ocean.“The drag from the propeller combined with the weight of the fuel onboard meant a ditching was unavoidable as the aircraft was unable to maintain altitude on one engine,” the ATSB’s Dr Stuart Godley said in a statement.The pilots escaped in a liferaft and were rescued shortly after, however the aircraft sank and was not been recovered.
