The British Army rugby team’s Southern Hemisphere tour was not only for rugby, it was also a reunion for Fijian lads. Former England winger Semesa Rokoduguni said the tour was overdue. Their tour saw them play against the New Zealand Defence Forces (NZDF) before two days before they faced Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) in the (Fiji v Scotland) curtainraiser Suva last Saturday. Despite 50-31 loss against the RFMF, Rokoduguni said it was a great trip home for a few of the team members. The British Army rugby team had about nine Fijian players including former Wardens and national sevens rep Solodrau Radianirova. “We’ve been planning this for a long time,” he said. “To actually come over here and play the Fijian Army is a dream come true for some of the lads and for some of the old lads like myself – it’s been an ongoing battle for us. “We got eight or nine Fijian players, young and old so it’s good for them to come back. Some of the boys, haven’t been home for a while. “Our backs coach, Jonasa Bulumakau, hasn’t been home for 21 years. And one of the guys for eight years, so for them to come back home and spend a few days with the family, it’s bonus for them while enjoying the Fiji weather and the game as well.” He added he was mixed with emotions to also witness the Flying Fijians, 29-14, win over Scotland at the HFC Bank Stadium. “I’ve got a few friends to as well in Scottish team to see them here and enjoying themselves and it was good. “Fiji got a decent team and they got a decent performance as well. The win was good for the supporters too.” The British Army side was hosted at the Naval Base following their match last Saturday. “We’re heading down to new Brisbane in the next few days for another match against an Australian Defense force. And hopefully after that, it’s game off for us.”
