An expat in France has shared the main issue people need to 'figure out' before moving abroad. Jeff, who left the US to live in France in the European Union , has tried to raise awareness for expats quitting their current country for France via his YouTube channel. Jeff said: "To me, what I really wanted for my existence here was connectivity for the rest of Europe without flying. That is what put me off Malta or Cyprus." The expat explained that while it "may be common in Europe," the ease of moving about on public transport is "the biggest benefit" for him. Rent, transportation, and food prices are very reasonable. It seems to be one of the most affordable areas." He said: "For me, it is what do you want to do? What are you planning on doing when you are there? Figure that out before you make the jump because you can go somewhere and discover that you do not want to live that way." "Is it a matter of you are going to get a house, make some friends and hang out, or do you want to travel around?" he asked. "I am sure I can find a nice place to live in Cyprus and Malta, which is reasonably priced. But, [I did not want to go to the] beach all the time or play golf." In 2023, approximately 8.9 million people who were born outside of France, or approximately 10.3% of the total population, were living in France. Jeff, who spoke to GB News, was discussing his new life in the country after quitting the US to live in the south of the country, which is a hugely popular area for Brits.
