Brooks Koepka Details Savage Self-Reflection Amid Major Drought
@Source: newsweek.com
Brooks Koepka has built his professional career around major championships. Consistency and winning at the four biggest tournaments is what drives him year in and year out. Not surprisingly, he considers not winning a major in 2024 a setback."Without a doubt, if you don't want a major, I think it [the season] is a failure," he said recently.Koepka discussed the topic on the latest edition of The Joe Pomp Show, hosted by journalist Joe Pompliano. The 5-time major champion explained why he focuses on majors, pointing out the historic dimension of any victory of that magnitude."Everything's a tuneup for the majors," Koepka said. "It's what you're remembered by in history, it's like anything you remember about championships, right? Nobody asks MJ how many regular season wins you had?"The LIV Golf star gave details of his preparation for the majors, revealing that he concentrates on his ball striking. He explained that he does not do any special mental preparation, arguing that the good condition of his golf technique gives him all the confidence he needs to win."Make sure my ball striking is correct, the fundamentals are down.... [Not mental preparation] that's what the whole prep is for, if all that's good, then I'll be eventually just fine, I know I'll win that battle on everybody out here," he said.That is not to say that Koepka downplays the importance of the mental toughness required to win a major. In fact, he believes that very few players are mentally prepared enough to be consistent in majors over time."It's a small percentage. You can get guys that play well, anybody can get hot for one week, but been able to be consistent in the longevity it's going to be a lot different, to be able to withstand that over years and years."Brooks Koepka has won five major championships in the last eight seasons, including a double in 2018. He won the U.S. Open in 2017 and repeated the feat the following year, when he also won the PGA Championship. He went on to win the Wanamaker Trophy two more times, in 2019 and 2023.In addition, Koepka has been extremely consistent in these types of events, adding another 13 top-10s to his wins, including four runner-up finishes. He has finished in the top 10 in 42.9% of his major starts (18 of 42) and in 48.6% of his cuts made (18 of 37).These results are even better in recent years. Between 2017 and 2024, Koepka has played in 29 editions of the majors, made 26 cuts (89.7%) and finished in the Top 10s in 14 (48.3% of the total), including all his five wins and his four runner-up finishes.For him though, that is not enough.More Golf: Rickie Fowler Throws Himself Under the Bus Amid Arnold Palmer Inv.
