Caelan Doris’ dreams of Lions captaincy set to be dashed as Andy Farrell opts for England rival ahead of squad reveal

CAELAN DORIS’ dream of a Lions captaincy is set to be snuffed out by England rival Maro Itoje.
Andy Farrell will this afternoon name his squad for the tour of Australia and crocked Ireland back-rower Doris appears to be the big loser.
Red Rose skipper Itoje is favourite to be named captain and his chances increased further when it emerged Doris was due to have shoulder surgery this week after going off in Leinster’s Champions Cup semi-final loss to Northampton Saints.
Apart from Doris, there are injury clouds over his Ireland pal Mack Hansen, Scottish centres Huw Jones and Sione Tuipulotu, England wing Immanuel Feyi-Waboso and Red Rose full-back George Furbank.
Three playmakers will be taken Down Under with Finn Russell in pole position to face the Wallabies. Behind the Scot are Fin Smith, Sam Prendergast, Marcus Smith, Jack Crowley, George Ford and Andy’s son Owen Farrell.
Ireland head coach Faz will also make a call on Owen’s fellow France-based players like Jack Willis and Blair Kinghorn, who would be late on tour because of the Top 14 play-offs.
Other Lions hopefuls will find out today if they will land a near-€120,000 windfall by being picked.
Farrell’s squad, of around 38 players, will be announced at London’s O2 Arena at 2pm.
On the last Covid-hit tour to South Africa in 2021, players pocketed around €80,000 each but missed out on an €11,000 bonus for winning the Test series.
This time they will get extra cash thanks to a profit-sharing scheme.
Clubs will cash in, too, with Leinster possibly netting a seven-figure sum depending on how many Blues are selected.
The tour is expected to generate €230million for the Lions and Rugby Australia, with the tourists taking 40 per cent instead of about 15 per cent on previous trips.
Test tickets are selling fast, with the Second Test in Melbourne expected to pack in 100,000 punters.
Only the captain knows if he is on the trip in advance.
The rest will be kept in the dark until this afternoon.
Head coach Farrell and his assistants met yesterday for their final selection meeting.
