A star from Call the Midwife has shared news of their return to the popular BBC series after an eight-year hiatus.
Fans of the show were thrilled to learn that Chris Harper was to make a comeback as nurse Trixie's brother, Geoffrey Franklin, in the 2024 Christmas special. He has now shared that he will continue the role he departed from eight years prior.
Recently known for his portrayal of the villainous Nathan Curtis on ITV's 'Coronation Street' a character who was imprisoned for grooming Bethany Platt Harper, expressed his enjoyment in playing the good-natured Geoffrey, which marks a stark contrast to his notorious role on Corrie, as reported by the Mirror.
Chris commented: "I'm hoping very soon Geoffrey from Call the Midwife will be making his return to Poplar. The series that's on telly at the moment, I will be appearing again at the back end of. Which I absolutely love doing."
Reflecting on the warm and welcoming environment on set, he added: "They talk about a family atmosphere. That's the cast and crew of Call the Midwife. It's just a joy to be part of. And I love playing that character because he's such a fixer. He's a lovely guy, but he also comes in and helps people. So he's the absolute polar opposite of Nathan.", reports the Manchester Evening News.
In conversation with The Sun, he also remarked: "He's [Geoffrey] a completely different character. And when I get spotted in the street, I definitely inherited niceness. There are people who know that Geoffrey from Call the Midwife is lovely, so I think they just assume I am. And so I benefit from that. Nobody's ever met me on the street and assumed I'm like Nathan."
Devotees of Call the Midwife, the beloved series chronicling the lives of nurse midwives in 1960s East End London, can look forward to another trip to Poplar tonight on BBC One. However, fans will need to be patient for the following instalment.
Due to the BAFTA Film Awards taking centre stage, the show will take a brief hiatus, with the next episode (episode 7) postponed until Sunday, February 23, at its regular slot of 8pm.
Tonight's episode presents Joyce with a harrowing situation as she deals with a mother experiencing postnatal complications, while a council strike sparks an outbreak of Weil's disease, and Cyril's life veers into unexpected territory.
At the Radio Times Covers Party 2025, held last week, cast members shared teasers about their characters' futures. Helen George, who portrays Trixie Franklin, was quizzed on whether her on-screen husband Matthew might reappear in Poplar.
Responding to the speculation, she remarked: "Who knows! It'll be interesting to see what happens there. At the moment, I don't know, and I'm excited to find out what happens."
Regardless, it seems brother Geoffrey will return to brighten Trixie's days.
Call the Midwife will be back on BBC One screens from 8pm on Sunday
