Cameron Young's Tour Championship Surge Fuels Ryder Cup Hopes
@Source: newsweek.com
Cameron Young is one of several players vying for one of Keegan Bradley's six Ryder Cup captain's picks. Of all the players in that group, none have outperformed Young so far at the Tour Championship, something he knows could be decisive.The 28-year-old fired a second-round 62 at East Lake to climb to third place in the event, just two shots behind leaders Tommy Fleetwood and Russell Henley. If that's not knocking hard on the Ryder Cup door, it's damn close."I've been saying for the last bunch of weeks now that my goals were get here and get there, to the Ryder Cup," Young told the reporters after the second round, according to the transcripts of his presser. "I've done part one, and part two I think involves some good golf here. I've just got to do my best to keep that up over the next couple days and see what I get out of it."However, Young also knows that his chances of making the team go far beyond what happens at the Tour Championship. In fact, he appears ready to make his case to Bradley."I think (my) recent form is kind of a hard one to deny," he said, according to the transcripts. "Aside from that, it's my home state, it's a golf course I love. It's almost exclusively a major championship venue, and my major record is pretty good. I think there's a few points that if I had to make my case to him, those are things I'd like him (Bradley) to know."The one-time PGA Tour winner also confirmed that the American Ryder Cup captain has been keeping an eye on him, as he has on all of his potential free picks."He's been incredibly encouraging to me," Young said, according to the transcripts. "He's obviously watching everybody very closely, and he's been very kind to reach out and show some enthusiasm and some support when I've played well. But yeah, I know he's got a lot on his plate, so I don't expect a ton from him. But he's been very nice to me, and I appreciate any consideration he's given me to putting me on that team."Young is currently ranked 14th on the American Ryder Cup team. Although the ranking already fulfilled its formal objective after the six direct qualifiers were decided, it remains an invaluable tool for Bradley when evaluating the performance of his potential picks.A solid result at East Lake would allow Young to climb even further in the rankings and even break into the top 12. This, combined with his current golf level, makes him as serious a candidate as any.The New York native has saved his best golf of the season for the month of August. In the last three weeks, he earned his first PGA Tour victory (Wyndham Championship), finished fifth in the FedEx St. Jude Championship, and 11th in the BMW Championship.And he is thriving at the Tour Championship.More Golf: Phil Mickelson Reveals Feeling 'Anxious' on PGA Tour as He Praises LIV Golf
