Just missing out on a podium finish was 12-year-old Chinese prodigy Yu Zidi, who placed fourth with a time of 2:09.21. Yu had burst off the blocks fastest and was in medal position through the early stages but faded slightly in the final stretch. She now sets her sights on joining swimming legend Michael Phelps as the only athletes to win five individual titles at a single world championships. The reigning Olympic champion and world record holder entered the 200m medley as the overwhelming favorite, having shattered Katinka Hosszu’s decade-old world record earlier this year. At the Canadian trials in June, McIntosh posted a blazing time of 2:05.70, rewriting the record books. She also broke her own 400m medley world record during those trials, marking her third world record in just a matter of days. McIntosh emerged as one of the biggest stars at the Paris Olympics last year, winning three gold medals, including a double in the 200m and 400m medley events.
