Carlos Rodón, Yankees’ bullpen dominate in shutout win over Rangers

NEW YORK — With the way the Yankees’ offense has been rolling for much of this season so far, most of their wins have featured crooked numbers on the scoreboard. Entering play on Thursday, the Yankees had scored four-plus runs in 26 of their 29 wins this year. That doesn’t mean they don’t have the ability to win a close, low-scoring affair, though. They proved it in Thursday’s 1-0 win over the Rangers, a victory to close out a three-game sweep against Texas. The difference was Jorbit Vivas’ solo home run off Rangers starter Nathan Eovaldi in the fifth, the rookie’s first big-league blast. Vivas’ shot to right traveled 360 feet, a first-pitch fastball over the heart of the plate. Yankees starter Carlos Rodón was dominant again, twirling six shutout innings with eight strikeouts, allowing only two hits with two walks. Rodón leads the league with a .161 opponent batting average. His ERA on the season is down to 2.88. The left-hander has been the true No. 2 behind ace Max Fried that these Yankees have desperately needed with Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil out. The Yankees’ bullpen took care of the rest. Mark Leiter Jr. pitched a scoreless seventh, Devin Williams retired the side in order in the eighth and closer Luke Weaver shut the door with ease in the ninth. With Fernando Cruz on the injured list — he has inflammation on his shoulder — those three relievers will need to keep pitching well in high leverage. Williams continues to be reliable, winning back the trust of Yankees fans after his shaky first impression. He’s up to 10 scoreless outings over his last 11 games, lowering his ERA on the season from 11.57 to 6.50 in that span. LOOKING AHEAD Friday: Yankees at Rockies, 8:40 p.m., YES.
