Carlton were certainties, but they did have an advantage: their opponents were English

Looking back, it is difficult to know which would have been the hardest challenge to overcome for the visiting British Lions.
Not only did the touring rugby union outfit have to take on reigning champions Carlton in a game of Australian Rules at the MCG, they also had to sit through renditions of Invocation in B-Flat Major and the Coronation March from Le Prophete during a civic reception at the Melbourne Town Hall.
One was a strain on the hamstrings, the other agony on the ears.
But things were different way back in 1888 when the Lions first toured Australia. In those days, putting on a show was a less complicated pursuit. They’d never dream of Meatloaf.
