The Bahamas women’s national volleyball team fought valiantly but was unable to pull off a victory against Jamaica, the defending champions, in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association (CAZOVA) Senior Volleyball Championships at the Kendal G.L. Isaacs Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.
The defending champions handed the home team a 3-1 loss to advance to the semifinals.
Team Bahamas is currently 0-3 (win/loss record) at the regional tournament.
Team head coach Renaldo Knowles described last night’s loss as hurtful.
“Tonight’s loss hurt a little, but we know the type of team we have and we knew what we had coming into the tournament, and we knew our goals,” he said.
“I think with the team that we have, we accomplished a lot of our goals. Although we didn’t win a game, we still did what we came to do,” he said.
Following a 3-0 loss to Trinidad & Tobago on Monday, Team Bahamas came out with intensity in the opening set against Jamaica.
The team took an early 12-9 lead, but Jamaica stormed back to steal the win, 26-24.
In the second set, it was all Jamaica. The visiting team defeated Team Bahamas 25-18.
With Junkanoo music blaring in the gymnasium, Team Bahamas thrived in the third set.
The hosts leveled the score at 17 apiece and eventually pulled ahead 23-19.
They peaked in the third set and ultimately prevailed 25-21 against the reigning champions.
Jamaica responded with a dominant showing in the fourth and final set. They quashed any hopes of a five-set showdown, defeating Team Bahamas once and for all, 25-13.
The women’s national team will try to redeem their performance in the fifth/sixth place matchup at 1 p.m. today.
Coach Knowles is expecting the team to bring the fight.
“The mindset is the same thing I preach every game – play your hardest, have fun and the results will show. Until the last ball drops, we will play as hard as we could,” he said.
Prior to last night’s loss, the women’s national team fell 3-0 to Trinidad & Tobago on Monday.
They went to five sets against Guadeloupe on Sunday but came up short 3-2.
The men’s national volleyball team competed against Suriname last night. Those scores were not available up to press time.
