Celtic 3 Livingston 0: Martindale admits shape change left Lions vulnerable against rotated Hoops side, as Parkhead hoodoo continues

By Ian Steven Livingston’s unenviable record of never recording a league win at Celtic Park was extended against a rotated Celtic side who had one eye on their Champions League qualifier in Kazakhstan on Tuesday, as David Martindale’s men suffered their first league defeat of the season. The West Lothian club set themselves up in a 5-4-1 formation to stifle the multitude of attacking threats that Celtic possess, leaving the manager pondering whether ringing the changes after Celtic’s first goal was the most prudent move. A Benjamin Nygren brace after the break and a Johnny Kenny strike sealed the win for the Hoops. And Martindale said: “Second half, obviously got a structure, got a game plan, and then you lose that quick goal, which actually comes from us being out of shape. “We press. I think we get up and we press every 18 yard box. So we've lost our shape a wee bit from us having the ball. And then that kind of leads to our goal and then we change our shape to compete in the game. “And I think the change of shape really helped us offensively in terms of getting into the opponent's half, getting box entries. But I think it kind of hurt us a wee bit defensively. I kind of changed it pretty early, it was only about 60 minutes and that kind of left us a wee bit vulnerable later on there.” It looked like luck could be on Livingston’s side as Jerome Prior pulled off a series of spectacular saves to keep the scores level at half time, leading to his manager extolling the virtues of the French goalkeeper, but another superb save from Prior just after half time fell into the path of Nygren as Livingston’s luck ran out. The visitors pushed and left gaps at the back allowing Nygren to snatch a second before Johnny Kenny got on the end of a Daizen Maeda cross to make it three for the reigning champions. “Jerome's got it in his locker to be honest,” Martindale stated. “And I think when you come to venues like you've got today, you need to carry a wee bit luck at times as well. But I felt we limited Celtic, to very little in the first half. Jerome comes up with a big save, but we never caused him any problems at all at the top end. “ The Lions gaffer admitted the wealth of riches in the East End of Glasgow overshadowed his more frugal set-up at Almondvale with the manager’s head left spinning by the amount of international talent that Brendan Rodgers could afford to leave on his bench. “When you are looking at their team sheet, you're still seeing a lot of quality there. You are at Celtic for a reason. You look at Anthony Ralston coming in and he’s been playing for Scotland and he's going to be playing Champions League football next week. He has played Champions League football this year, played Champions League football most years. "So when you look at the changes, I think it's quite easy to say they've made a lot of changes, but their changes are still really, really strong. “I turned around and I see McGregor and Maeda warming up to go on. So listen, a big club, big club, elite level football. And I think anyone that steps on that park for Celtic is more than capable of playing for Celtic. “ The Lions are fourth in the Premiership and next week face a Hearts side who fought back from 3-0 down to draw with Motherwell at home today.
