Censor Board Orders 'Sister Midnight' Makers To Cut Radhika Apte’s Frontal Nudity Scenes

Radhika Apte, known for portraying bold and unconventional roles in Indian cinema, is once again at the centre of controversy. The actress, who has never shied away from intense or provocative performances, is facing censorship issues with her latest film Sister Midnight, directed by Karan Kandhari. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has ordered the removal of a nudity scene involving Radhika Apte, which occurs at the 1 hour 11 minute mark of the film. According to reports, the scene does not comply with Indian content guidelines. The CBFC has made it clear that the film will only be certified for release in India if the scene is removed. Previously, the British Board of Film Classification noted a scene with partial nudity, including brief visibility of breasts and buttocks. However, that scene had already been cut for the Indian release. Despite these modifications, Sister Midnight has received an ‘A’ (adults only) certificate. In addition to the visual edits, the CBFC has directed the filmmakers to mute all curse words and include a prominent disclaimer at the beginning of the film. The disclaimer states: “This film is a work of fiction. The applicant, producer, director, artist, or any other person associated with this movie does not intend to promote, propagate, or endorse superstition, the supernatural, witchcraft, or magic in any way.” These measures were taken to manage potentially sensitive content and ensure audiences are not misled by fictional elements. Sister Midnight follows the story of Uma, a newlywed woman whose life takes a dark turn due to harassment from her husband. The film, which gained international attention at Cannes 2024, was released in India on May 30, 2025. It has been well-received by critics, but some viewers have expressed disappointment on social media over the omission of the original uncut version.
