London: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was abruptly interrupted by a group of protesting students during her address at Kellogg College, Oxford University, in London on Thursday. The protesters attempted to disrupt her speech by raising concerns about post-poll violence and the RG Kar Rape-Murder Case. The event took a dramatic turn when Banerjee, responding to the heckling, held up an old photograph of herself from the early 1990s. The image showed her with a bandaged head, which she presented as proof of an alleged attempt on her life during her time in the opposition. “If I die, before my death, I want to see unity. Unity is our strength and divide is our fall. It is Swami Vivekananda’s faith. To keep unity is a very difficult thing and to divide the people, it takes only a moment. Do you think the world can sustain with such [divisive] ideology?," the West Bengal Chief Minister said at the event. “When I am in the Chair, I cannot divide the society. I have to look after the weaker section and poor people. We have to work hard for them. At the same time, we have to work for all religions, castes and creeds together. We have to go ahead with them and help them," she added. Watch the video here The disruptions began while Banerjee was discussing Bengal's development and investment opportunities. An audience member challenged her to specify the investment proposals worth "lakhs of crores" that she claimed the state had received. She was then questioned about the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case in Kolkata, which had triggered widespread protests by doctors across the country. An audience member challenged Banerjee on her government's handling of the incident, eliciting a sharp response from her. "This matter is sub judice, this case is with the central government. Do not do politics here, this platform is not for politics. You are lying. Do not make it a political platform," she said. "You go to Bengal and tell your political party to become even stronger. I will answer you, first see my picture, how an attempt was made to kill me," she added. The unexpected protest stunned the audience, but they applauded the Chief Minister's response. The protesters were eventually compelled to leave the hall at the audience's insistence, and Banerjee smoothly concluded her speech without any disruptions. Notably, former Indian cricket team captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly was also present in the audience during the incident. During her London visit, Banerjee attended several meetings on industry and trade. However, the highlight of her trip was her speech at Kellogg College, where the protest erupted.
