Charleston cuts toilet paper rather than ribbon to celebrate new bathrooms at Municipal Golf Course

CHARLESTON — Golfers at the city's municipal course can now find "relief" at bathrooms, located along both the front and back nine holes. For years, the 18-hole course locals call "The Muni" has been without permanent facilities. Those who are answering nature's call while playing did so in a portable toilet. Or they found a nearby tree. "We're happy to provide some relief," said Mayor William Cogswell, a self-proclaimed duffer, before karate-chopping a strand of toilet paper that replaced a traditional ribbon-cutting during the brief ceremony held May 30. Located between holes four and five, and on the 12th fairway, the two beige buildings trimmed in "Charleston green" each feature a pair of gendered restrooms equipped with running water and electricity. They cost taxpayers more than $565,000 to build, and another $15,000 annually for upkeep, according to city's 2025 budget. "This is a facility that's been needed for decades," said Bert Atkinson, who has been playing the course for more than 50 years and has won the Senior Amateur Championship numerous times. The issue dates back to at least the 1950s, when a local women's group was denied entry into the Ladies National Golf Association "due to lack of facilities," said Bobby Collins, a board member of the nonprofit The Friends of The Muni. If anyone was wondering, "That meant bathrooms," Collins said. The new lavatories opened just in time for the Ladies City Championship, which tee off May 31 and June 1.
